    Winter water...

Aha! I guess I kind of take for granted that there is a pretty large Orthodox presence in SW PA, more so than in most areas of the country. Unfortunately, many Orthodox jurisdictions are abandoning the old calendar and are now celebrating Nativity on dec 25 (new calendar).

    Winter water...

The windchill was -35 I think and 40 mph gusts. It was NASTY! I say Western Christmas because our family is Orthodox and we celebrate Nativity on January 7th. I didn't know there was also a Pittsburgh thing with two Christmases... I'd honestly never heard of that, but to be fair, I grew up...

    Winter water...

Yeah that is definitely not normal weather here and we were totally unprepared for it (on Western Christmas/Christmas Eve, no less!) My 3 girls with single combs definitely lost some tips to frostbite, but they were otherwise unscathed. We're going to get some ply wood and rig up something to...

    Winter water...

See my post above yours. I have a 5 gallon plastic bucket with horizontal nipples. I bought a plastic heating "plate" from tractor supply. The only time so far that it's failed to keep the water thawed (but not warm!) is yesterday when we'd had 24 hours of -20-30 wind-chill. We had to empty and...

    Winter water...

So we actually found a large red plastic "plate" at tractor supply that we just set the water bucket on top of. I was worried about plastic on heat, but it doesn't get warm enough to worry about. I also removed the drinking cups from the bucket and replaced them with horizontal nipples. It's...

    Winter water...

I think I am going to go with the birdbath thawer thing. I can drop that in the bucket from the top, put the anti-perch pyramid back on and keep using the bucket I already have. Seems like no matter what, I am going to have to run electric out there. Hopefully soon, we can get electricity run to...

    Winter water...

Yes! This is great because my waterer is on a cinder block. I also realized I will probably need to get nipples to replace the cups for winter time, because the small amount of water in the cups will definitely freeze when it gets really cold.

    Winter water...

I live in SW Pennsylvania, it can get pretty cold here. I have a 5 gallon plastic bucket with cup drinkers. What can I do during the winter to keep it from freezing? Would changing it out, or adding a gallon of hot water every day keep it from freezing or should I get a heater. My coop is pretty...
