When I candled them before incubation (after resting), I really couldn't see much. It was my first time candling. They all kind of looked uniform throughout like liquid. I used a very powerful LED flashlight, many more lumens that dedicated egg candlers, like magic fly or incu-brite (at least on...
It's interesting that their head colors don't change yet, so to contrast their newborn fuzz colors with their emerging feather colors, for the most part you can just compare their bodies to their heads :thumbsup
Now I get it. Or maybe I'm getting close.
Roux dilute is a diluter gene that can be applied to either Tibetan or Rosetta (Extended Brown base birds). Which, if applied, results in a Scarlett, or a Red Range, respectively. So the question is, are my two darker chicks:
a) Rosetta (1 copy EB w/...
Clearly I need to read up on the roux gene again for the 24th time... it's just not sinking in at all~ so both tibetan and scarlett are rosetta? Or both tibetan and rosetta are scarletts? Ahhhhh😫

The above thread is great for coturnix chick ID pics. On the other hand, it suggests that my two reds are scarlett and not rosetta. The plot thickens. Or it's just a crap shoot all around lol
Thanks for sharing that

I'm posting some updated pictures of the chicks now @ 1 week old. I've also used natural day light instead of the heat lamp, so the colors will be more accurate and hopefully revealing! Does anyone else want to chime in on guesses?
I hear you, and that makes sense. It's fun to look at though. Lots of guess work!
These chicks are from a Falb Fee line that is said to hatch 70% true, and from a Scarlet/Range line that can still hatch out Scarlett, Red Range, Range Tuxedo, Scarlett Tuxedo, Egyptian and White.
This is my...
I think you are likely correct with rosetta.
Here is a link with some good coturnix chick ID pics, including rosetta. (will need to scroll doen to the chick section)

It would be so great to see a fully populated chick ID guide like this
Rosettas, interesting. I'll post new pics as they grow out. There does seem to be a slight red tone difference in the stripes of the two roux chicks. I noticed right away right after hatching. It's subtle, and difficult to quantify, but it's there. Of course it's difficult to tell with such a...
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the world of quail and to the BYC forum. I've been researching all things quail for awhile now, and I'm having a great time with it.
I've noticed that there isn't a picture-based guide online anywhere to help identify newborn coturnix quail chicks. I think it would...
