As with all people, there are good and bad (or what we perceive as such). I do love to learn about the way certain people live. Quote: Irishrovr, everything I do is to learn homesteading and living off the grid. I want to rely only on me (and my husband, of course). Chickens, garden...

WyoDreamer, I imagine that's the case in every situation (extremes/good/bad). I just always imagine the Amish as so very wholesome and nurturing. :) Thanks for your input. New to chickens, I still think of mine as pets (and probably always will). Thanks!

There were no fenced in areas near the coops that I could see (barbed wire for horses and cows, yes). Barns were on the properties, but not necessarily near the coops. One of the coop doors was open a bit (the one with 300), and I glanced in. Saw rows and rows of nesting boxes and lots and lots...

Quote: Hmmm. Surprised by that. I guess you can't believe everything you hear and read (of course, I should know this by now). And to think we considered giving our rooster to them. Once I saw the overcrowded coops, I changed my mind. We did get our beagle from an Amish farm, and he has been...

I'm curious about something completely unrelated to previous conversations. Forgive me, but I need to ask, and some of you might know. Two weeks ago I went shopping in Amish country (bakery, plants, etc.). We stopped at a few farms, and two had visible chicken coops. No runs. I asked how many...

I ordered and received the no-crow collar. My rooster is only 11 weeks old and not very loud. Yet. Not sure when to put it on him, but I'll be playing it by ear. The hens are doing well. It turns out they like chicken pot pie (though what I was thinking baking it during the summer....). How are...

Hey, Firstchic! I am more of a reader/stalker of this thread. I LOVE seeing what fellow Wisconsinites are up to. Not a lot new in the La Crosse area. Enjoying this weather.

Glorious day here too in Gods Country. My raised gardens are out of control, the chickens have strawberry on their feathers and Coat One of the deck stain is done. Anyone in need of an eight-week old EE rooster? Super sweet (so far), but it would better to rehome him sooner than later (thought...

Quote: Awwww.... I couldn't let a sick cat get any sicker. Would probably cost me a few hundred bucks in vet bills. Then, I'd feel obligated to keep it, and it would move indoors. I do not need another indoor cat!!!! Trying to do the homesteading/downsizing thing. Don't need any more cats...

Quote: Will do, Celtic Chick. :) Was at a friend's dairy farm yesterday in Vernon County. If I took a sickly cat that was dropped off, they would take my roo. Ummm. Nope! I love cats and have four, but this one was not in good shape. I will keep looking. Cheesehead82, I'm jealous that you...

Great to know. Since I'm in town, I have to keep my flock small. My DREAM is to get acreage in the next three years or so and go Chicken Crazy (and Llama Crazy and maybe Sheep Crazy). I was naïve enough to think Farm & Fleet didn't make sexing mistakes. Oops! It's a learning process for sure.

Good morning, CelticChick~ Quote: I can't have roosters in town. It would be a gamble to keep him with a no-crow collar AND not knowing if he's going to be hellion or a gentleman.

Oh, I have not purchased the No-Crow collar yet. I did some reading on ratios between hens and roosters. That sort of stopped me in my tracks (3 hens: 1 rooster = not necessarily good!).

Celtic Chick, thanks for your cheerleading! I did "network" at a graduation party today, throwing out that I have a young roo who needs rehoming. Quote: I might try CL, but I would prefer Cupcake (aka Clyde) to go to a local home (and not to a Crock Pot, but I have no true control over that)...

Good morning, Wisconsinites! I am in the La Crosse area and new to chickens. I have 3 EE and 1 RIR. They were supposed to be pullets, but I suspect one of the EEs is a roo. From looking through this thread, it seems that there are swaps, clubs and associations that are hosted regularly? If the...
