When we built the frame we used 2x4 along the bottom on the inside and placed a layer of fence and used fencing nails to attach
We also took 24” y’all HC and bent it at about 4 in and layed long pat along the ground and the four inches against the fence. Then took 2x6 on the outside and screwed...
Even though coyotes and bobcats are larger I still think raccoons are the worst. Just because of their ability to climb and squeeze in small places. And they’re so smart. It took a long time and we work in sections to get our 640 ft.² of run like this but it’s worth it. Sometimes it makes it...
I’ll see if I have any with me if not I would be more than happy to take some when I get home. Don’t give up. It is very discouraging losing a flock or even just one. And if you could send a picture of your run also maybe I can give you some suggestions I did. Some people may not consider my run...
I’ve busted raccoons on top of my run and it’s almost 8 foot tall. That’s why I also covered the topThat’s the problem with raccoons they can climb anything dig through anything and are smart. Our use 4 inch welded wire fence covered with chicken wire from bottom to top with the hardware cloth...
I’ve never known of a raccoon to only take one chicken unless they get caught in the act. Years ago I had one slide it’s arm through a 3 inch opening in for a young chicken out. Tried for another and ripped the poor girls leg off. We tried but the injury was just too much especially since she...
:hitQuite a while ago in this thread I had put a vote in for raccoons. I wish I could vote for two. Possum in my run last night Thank God for my rooster and my cat. Otherwise there would’ve been much more casualties I think. Still devastated
I was joking before. I personally couldn't kill any living creature. But we found ways to predator proof. It can be done with a little extra work and time. If we can keep predators out living where we live then anybody can do it
That's what I've done since and I've seen raccoon at night in the yard and in the shed but my chickens have stayed safe since the run remodeling and they sleep on top of the hen house ( about 6 ft) in the run.
Lots of different measures like 2x4 welded wire fencing covered with chicken wire held into 4x4 post with U nails specifically. Nylon chicken netting on the top even though it's almost 10 ft tall and sprinkle cayenne pepper around the exterior once a week or so
:hit:hit I lost one of my young hens their first night in the run to a raccoon. It tried to get a second one through the fencing in ripped his entire leg off. And she didn't make it either. Was the saddest thing ever I don't even like to see a picture of a raccoon
