It's called the Murphy's Law Dance. It goes like this...cross your fingers, turn in a circle 3 times, and sing "I want roosters, I want roosters." As sure as pigs fly and chicken oink, you'll get hens.
Now that I see how many roosters I've got already of other breeds, I think I'll...
Remember the pics of the 5 favs I hatched? Here's one for reference...
Now they look like this...all pullets!
Someone came to check out all the breeds/chicks I have and fell in love with the favs. So I'll be selling a couple. These have black tips on the head feathers and aren't show...

let me change my vote on these. all pullets but yep, with something going on in the head feathers.

Hmm, what are the odds? 5 out of 6 eggs hatched and they're all pullets? Crazy--and great I guess. They all have white feathers emerging on their chests. One with some...
: Everyone. I guess time will tell for sure. When do they get all sweet? I handle them and have since the hatch...pets, cuddles, etc. but they jump a mile high and run away when I come over to the brooder...the buckeyes are as calm or calmer at this point. Do they just need to be handled more?
So, since I'm at 3.5 weeks with these things...3 more weeks, or what? When I have no expectation of being able to tell gender it is actually easier to wait. Not EASY, but easier
Interesting pics. The 5 salmon favs I hatched out 3 1/2 weeks ago all look lighter than those. There is one, maybe two I think might be cockrels. Here are some pictures. I love to hear your guesses too.
Pullets....
Cockrels?...
and two pullets with the cock in the middle for comparison...
Sounds like you have an excellent start and the drive to do it. Go for it! My favs are LF, so that's probably it.....I'll just keep waiting then. Thanks.
Well, we are not the best farmers, but we do enjoy the animals...most of the time If you are seriously considering farming as a profession I would recommend you read Joel Salatin's book You Can Farm and perhaps his book Pastured Poultry Profit$. I read the first and found it quite...
Can anyone show me a picture of ideal toes and legs with their feathering? Oh, and describe the breed standards? I'd like to know so I can watch as my babies develop. When it comes time to choose a roo to keep I'll post pictures, but until then I'd like to learn what to watch for.

I got my eggs from a BYCer here in California. Since this was my first time hatching shipped eggs I wanted to buy as local as possible. Apparently the are mostly from Belt Hatchery lines, but good for hatchery birds. Also there is some confusion about the size of the parent stock...
Hi, I've been following this thread a bit. Now I have 5 favorelle chicks that hatch on Monday. 5 out of 6 shipped eggs! How soon can I tell the different genders and what are the best markers?
