Boo hatched her chicks! 5 so far and she's a great mom! She's still on 3 more and I candled today and they're still alive. Should hatch by tomorrow if they're going to.
I hatched 6 new SFH chicks sunday! And my broody, Boo should be hatching soon! She was off this morning eating extra and a couple eggs were cheeping. They're due over like 3 days so if she doesn't sit and hatch them all I can put the late ones in the incubator. 2 eggs are due tomorrow and it was...
I think they will definitely keep the pattern. I have some crosses in the brooder right now. 4 are 50% swede, 25% araucana, 25% Egyptian fayoumis. They're getting white feathers in just like the pure babies I have them in with. Not as many, but its looking like at least 2 will be pretty...
Good to know on the bare belly! I probably didnt notice before because the banty cochin was such a meanie.
She came from Greenfire. She's not on any of her own eggs unfortunately but I think 4-6 of the 10 in the incubator are hers.

Its nice to hear others have had expirience with 8 month old broodies! I was going to move her a few nights ago and told dbf the plan. He thought moving her wasn't a good idea if I wanted her to keep sitting so we moved the rest of the flock to a different coop. His idea! haha The rooster, 3...
I have a broody swede!! She's only 8 months old and just started laying a month ago.. I'm going to try and move her tonight so hopefully all goes well. She's been on and off for about 5 days but she's been sitting 100% now for probably 2 days. She's spent maybe 5 nights on the nest so far and...
Here's pics of my new batch of 8. I ended up with 3 orange, 2 brown(one clearly crested), 1 yellow w/ light blue, 1 dark blue w/ yellow, and a blue w/ brown head!
Haha, the 3 orange ones look like they're gossiping!
Getting sleepy...
and down!
I hatched out 8 little pure chicks yesterday! Very colorful and a few with cute little crests. I was fighting the incubator on humidity the whole time but the 8 that hatched are FAT and healthy. I'll try and get some pics soon when they're dry!
I put 17 pure eggs in lockdown yesterday from my own flock out of 21 set. Then I have some half swedes in there that are blocked off from the pure so I can band the pure ones at hatch. Hoping for chicks in a couple days!!
I set 20 pure eggs today!! I'm actually murderbating in my LG so lets see how many I dont kill in 3 weeks! Haha I got a new thermometer so I should do better this time. I also set 20 other eggs that were, up until recently, fertilized by my sfh roo. I'm going to put a divider and band the pure...
Hmm, I wonder what makes that color.
Found this pic a while back but I haven't seen any in the U.S. quite like this. I have seen the color, but not one with great patterning.

I have some new pics. I have 4 pullets and a roo. 3 of the girls are laying and Boo, the blue pullet should start laying withing a month or so I'm guessing.
The mille fleur girl in front is a bit older then the other girls and lays a pretty large egg. She's crested but the roo went through a...
Lol, I got nothing.. Weathers been too crappy! I do have a couple eggs in the incubator on day 13 but the powers probably gonna go out in this snow storm we're about to get so I'm not counting my chicks before they hatch! I'm sure I have some pics I havn't posted yet.. Let me see.
I have gone back and forth with crossing pure sfh to other breeds and in the end I think it is a landrace fowl. Not something that took someone years of taking particular birds and crossing them for a particular goal. For right now I want as many good quality, healthy, pure birds that I can get...

There's a picture of one on this site that made me think of eventually trying to cross them to buff orps.. It would probably take a few generaions of back crossing and crossing the mixes together but you could probably get a gold bird with pretty cool...
