Here is an example. I hatched some Spitzhaubens eggs out that I had bought. None had crest and one had a small beard. The seller claimed they were pure Spitz. I disagreed. Turns out the bearded chick was an Americauna(?) roo over a Pavlovskaya hen. The crestless Spitz were from her crestless...

The coop and the run all have nets...32 x 32 feet and the other one is about 20 x 20. I got fine black fishing net on ebay.....works great and keep the starling and sparrows out as well. If I l would let mine free range, I would use bamboo poles, about 10 feet high and then drape it down from...

So sorry to hear of your loss. It seems like the hawks and eagles pick our favorites. I lost quite a few this spring and then put up fish nets. Saw and Bald Eagles go after my Marans and bounce off the net. The hens have a 32 x 32 space to run in and when I get home, they get to free range. The...

In my case, the hawk or eagle doesn't really care about color or crest...it's more like who can they pick and carry off with the least amount of fuss and danger. Or the most dimwitted one who doesn't run for cover. I put up fish net over two of the runs and that helped a lot.

I paid $30 per hen for my breeding quad and roo from GFF. They were about 18 months olds. Most were none-crested and a couple hens had tiny crests. The chicks had either crests or none. The crests were bigger than the parents. I got the set from a lady who got them from GFF.

Use wire a strong dog cannot chew through. I used the regular chicken wire and the local lab ripped it apart. Then I switched to the stronger square wire and it stopped the dog. May cost a little more but well worth it, especially it always seems the predator will kill your fav bird or the most...

The smaller ones are same size as the RIR, the larger one are equal to my Leghorns, but just a hair smaller, but not much. The hens are the same size and sibling, about 18 months old. I grabbed...
