I have a friend that raised SFHs for a couple of years. She bred crested to crested and some of the resulting chicks had vaulted skulls and died within 5 days.

Ahhh, yes. That makes perfect sense. A big DUH for me.

I had forgotten about the thiamine deficiency. Wonder if the SFHs are more prone to this deficiency than other breeds, and if so, wouldn't supplementing thiamine during the administering of medicated feed solved the problem? This is a interesting problem and I'm hoping you will be able to help...

Can anyone tell me for a proven or known fact that vaulted skulls in SFHs is fatal? I know breeding crested to noncrested will cure the problem, but I would like to know more information about the vaulted skull problem. Thanks.

I have had cocci issues this year, but they could have been worse. At least I didn't lose any. I must have missed part of the discussion on SHFs and medicated feed. Why can SHF be ok with Corid (amprolium) and not medicated feed (amprolium)? What am I missing here?

"(But I warn you - and others will back me up - this breed is dangerously ADDICTIVE! You have been warned!)" I hear you loud and clear. I only have 3 and can already see where you're coming from.

Leigh, my pullets are too young to lay. I got a couple of eggs from a local breeder that were med-med lg sized eggs from her flock of SFHs. The SFH eggs I have seen thus far have been on the small size and it was my understanding that was "normal". I doubt I would get into this breed unless I...

I've noticed the eggs are a tad small for their size, as I eye them disapprovingly. While I suspected they weren't a meat bird, some times a smaller carcassed bird will fill out very nicely in a shorter amount of time than a larger sized bird. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Before I get involved with a breed, I always want to know the particulars of the utility value. Don't hear much about butchering the cockerels and how old they are to be considered worth butchering, or even if they are worth butchering. Since SFHs are a "smaller" large breed, do they fill out...

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it doesn't tell the whole story, does it? Thanks KYTinpusher.

After lurking here a bit, how do you decide what roo to keep?! They're all pretty and each succeeding one is prettier than the last.

Thanks for the input, hipeatall. I went back several pages and also picked up some additional information. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to hear anything else on the subject!

How does this breed co-minigle with others? In other words, where are they on the aggression scale when you integrate new chickens or they are put in a new pen with other chickens? How aggressive are the roosters? Do they learn to get along or do some real damage to each other? I'm sure there...

Great information KKH. Thank you for sharing. Homeopathy remedies are wonderful but be aware you only give them until improvement is shown. Stop it at that point or it will cause an aggravation to the problem. Also there are potencies. I would start with a 30C. If it helps but doesn't cure, I...

I love the looks of these birds. Those of you far enough along to have them laying well, I'd like to know about their performance-- how well they lay, egg size, disposition, and meat qualities of extra roos. How well do they integrate with other breeds/chickens? Can any one give some insight...

I'd like to know some first hand information on the utility qualities of this breed. Can anyone tell me what size the mature eggs are? What's the rate of lay? And do the birds grow out fast and how quickly do they flesh out to make good meat birds for culls? Since there have been a couple of...
