Thanks Puglady, I'll just lay them down then. That's how I usually do it. 60%... that explains the 3 I lost on the last hatch. I had it closer to 75-80% because I'm paranoid about shrink wrapping.
I am putting another 12 shipped SFH eggs on lock down tonight and have a question or two. I was thinking of setting these upright because of space issues. Can I just unplug the auto turners? Also what % humidity is do you all recommend for for lock down? I have used dry incubation through out.
Well my first SFH hatch is done. 3 SFH and 1 leghorn x lav Am out of 28 eggs. 10% + hatch rate...not my best numbers. But with shipped eggs I'm happy. I'll post pics when everyone is dry.
Ok, I candled and have 28+ (a few maybes) SFH due to hatch between the 28th and the 3rd. I saw dry incubation recommended so thats what I have been trying. I am concerned though, how dry is dry? Here no added water equals 16% humidity, is that to low?
He doesn't have any splits in his wing feathers. I'm not sure what you mean by sprigs but his has a classic single comb with straight, fairly even spacing on the "fingers". Unfortunately he is in that ugly teen stage right now but he is growing in his tail fast (compared to his hatch mates)...
Congrats on the great candle. I have to peek at my set tonight.
This is Larry. He is 5 1/2 months.
I was hoping to use him as my main SFH roo. Do you think he will be O.k. or should I keep looking.
I candled my SFH eggs last night,16 looked great, 3 clear, and the rest were iffy so i kept them cooking till next week.Between the new incubator and very well packed eggs this is the best rate I've had with shipped eggs yet. And today I will set another flat that came in yesterday. I just get a...
Weather is good here. Yesterday the high was 12 with 9inches of snow on the ground, today it was 45 and most the snow is gone. Gotta love spring in the Rockies.
She is probably referring to line divergence. Even though all SFH come from GFF if you take two flocks and keep them separate for several generations (the longer the better) they will follow different paths on the genetic level. Basically they are distant cousins. In small gene pools this is...
