Pics, as promised!
And I was wrong, they are both chocolate (pullets, YAY)!
For size comparison... The yellow chicks are Ameraucana x Delaware OEs and the rest are bantam Cochins. The chocolates are the biggest of the hatch - although one is hiding under the other.
I am quite happy...
I do believe I have hatched my first two LF Choc/Mauve Orp project chicks today! My "bantam" Chocs are from Richard / Pampered Poultry and they are anything but bantam at 7-8lbs. I have them over my 75% English girls. I hatched a choc and a black! I am VERY excited! Pics once everyone is...
I seem to be a glutton for fluff. Between the bantam English Orps, LF English Orps and the bantam Cochins, I have a lot of tushies to pluck and trim. There's over 40 out there to deal with. I kind of miss the Ameraucanas for that reason.
eta: Oh, definitely a hatchalolic. I set everything...
After dealing with fertility issues, I finally have some fertile eggs from my LF chocolate/mauve project! Out of 19 eggs, 4 are developing! I know, not a good percentage, but considering I have set every egg for the last 2 months (over 150) and none developed, this is great news! I trimmed...
Hm. I thought I had an answer for that but seems I am not sure. I would assume not. I would think only 50% of the time with the blue gene. You'd still produce chocolates if the parents where double chocolate gened since blue x blue can still give you black, and chocolate dilutes black =...
I don't show, but if I did I have 75% English and 100% English, so I would be showing what I have. What I have is what I like and what the breed was originally meant to look like. In my opinion, many of the APA SOP birds look like Australorps and I feel the US ruined a perfectly gorgeous bird...
Is this a line/inbreeding issue?
Mine were really fertile at the beginning and now 4wks later they are starting to be sketchy. They were in with a few boys, so maybe this cockerel isn't quite doing his job like he should be. The girls slowed up on laying, too. Out of 5 girls, I was getting...
Congrats, Deek! That is fantastic news!
I hatched my first chocolate bantam Orps from my flock today! Three fluffy little butts! I set these eggs right after I got them, too, so I was concerned fertility would be sketchy. I also hatched a black 100% English import bantam Orp from Tonea's...
I used to show QHs as a youth. Somewhere along the lines I lost my nerve and I sold my last horse in May 2012 (grade Paint gelding, rescued). I also got a bit big after my last kid and decided not to ride anymore.
I decided if I got tired of the chickens, I can eat them. You can't do that...
Creles are my favorite variety. GLOs and Chocolates are a very close second, for sure.
Any more pics of your Creles? Any of you? I could stare at them all night.
Thank you! I was hoping it wasn't a reason to cull her. As long as there is a possibility to breed it out, I'll try it. This bantam Cochin project is going to be interesting anyways... I did pick out chocolates with more Cochin like cushions, but they all have what Cochin breeders like to...
My camera sucks.
These are the best 2 out of 8 pictures. I also discovered they are not used to being held. Touched/pet they are fine. They didn't know how to walk on hay until yesterday either.
Very interesting. So, since they are not hard enamel like a Minorca, they aren't really white. But because the gene is there it comes through as pinkish? Like with anything, I am sure it can be bred out over time. As far as I know all my bantam Cochins have red earlobes... I guess I would...
They are not white like a leghorn, more fleshy. As Harry said, I have it in my Ameraucanas, too. I just noticed recently that I have quite a few girls in my Am flock with the fleshy earlobes. This Orp breeder told me she was actually culling the white earlobe birds she was getting, but no...
