Blacks are only introduced to improve type and feather quality. Most lavenders are not the quality of blacks otherwise there would be no need to use blacks. So it is recommended that you improve them instead of breeding inferior birds together.
Alan, I have no buffs but the blacks I had that were 100% UK imported blood weighed about 9 + #'s when they started to lay but I had a blue at 1 year old that was 12 1/2 #'s. Now these were UK blacks and not ones from Europe area. The imported whites were a lot smaller than your line you had...
Wish it was that easy for us. Use to be a lot easier but now there is the fear of disease spreading here. There were a lot more import stations in the US in the 1980's but now there appears to be only a few. I am talking about ones that import everything like cage birds and other animals...
Well sometimes one needs to use what is available. I hatched many black chicks last year and culled everything with a feather on the leg or between the toes and this year I had less than 1% with one feather or two feathers on the feet. Same with the whites, only had two with leg stubbles...
When was your particular birds mentioned? I made no comment about your birds or their picture. You stated a white bird with black legs is a SPORT which it is not. I don't want new people to think using them without any restriction is acceptable. I have one bird from an import that has dark...
Well a white bird with dark legs is not a SPORT it is a defect just check both the APA and the British Poultry Standards. White birds are suppose to have white legs not the sexlink ID+ gene.
Jeremy,
It would be a perfect world if everyone would disclose their genetic defects. Plus recessive genes can pop up with anyones stock. I agree with you the bird should be put in the freezer.
You may have attended the 2013 Pa Farm show in Harrisburg this year. The blue male that won best Orpington and Best English was a pure UK imported line bred bird either out of Julie's and/or Joy;s birds. You are correct though I have seen issues with some of the imports but there are also...
Sometimes they hatch white and turn to a greyish hue. Your birds came from a different source. The ones I have got so many different genes I will have to try and research for which color is the best to keep for pure whites, my opinion is the various greys would be the best. I toe punched the...
Well I cull for just one stub. Perhaps I am culling too crucial but I want to make sure I correct the defect to the slightist amount. They may still pop up again but if not to cull hard maybe every bird will have them eventually. I had very few issues with my blacks this year only two so far...
You must have the inside track there. Who do you know that imported current English show winners. I believe they would be a lot more expensive than the ones that were imported because a Winning bird at one of those big shows commands someone with a very large pocket. Most breeders will not...
