I don't know about the leg bands, they might be more porous, but I tried the sharpie on zip ties (low on colors so I "striped" some). It lasted about 4 days before it wore off...maybe if you put some sort of clear protective coat over it... edited to clarify

I am in no way an old timer as I've only had cockerel grow out pens for two years but figured I'd answer and give this a bump. :) in my very limited experience, yes, a low tail can absolutely be a pecking order thing. I saw it in a couple birds last year and one again this year. As a matter of...

Sugar in a poultice draws out infection and helps re-establish healthy pH balance to the tissue, which aids in healing. I believe it also acts as an antibacterial/anti-fungal, though the iodine would as well. But I've used a sugar/betadine poultice before to help treat a hoof abcess in my horse...

Agree it seemed to be more of a catch-all term, and varied some depending on what was considered desirable for the individual breed. It definitely wasn't limited to organs. Some excerpts from "Poultry for the Table and Market Versus Fancy Fowls" written in 1892... "what may be termed offal - say...

Offal can also refer to any waste/by-products in the butchering process so this may have been their way of describing excess fat deposits under the skin or in other locations...

Is it typically genetic rather than environmental, ie "fixing it" with wraps, positioning, etc would just be a cosmetic fix that would still hide an underlying issue? Also, I've read the SOP description and illustration, which basically matched the posted photo, but I've also seen instances...

Costco sells a grain free cat food under it's Kirkland Signatures brand, 32% protein with first two ingredients being fish meal and there's no added salt. It's about $20 for a 40lb bag. I don't know about the vitamins/minerals included, wrt chickens, but the inclusion of fermentation products at...

Thank you, totally different from what I was envisioning. I remember you talking about your bird on CSU, somehow I missed the photo and just didn't put it all together. Edited to add - went back through the CSU pics, if you are talking about the photo desertmarcy posted of her barnevelder...

Could someone also clarify the term loose wing? Is it just holding the wing "loosely" ie kinda hanging downward, or something else?

Good point Karen, I hadn't thought of that but we are pretty darn close in latitude. I'll have to look into their weather patterns.

I feed mine alfalfa leaves, and when bale alfalfa prices spiked I gave them pelleted alfalfa soaked in a little water. Didnt know it helped with conditioning, seems to keep the egg yolks nice and orange. Decided to stop over thinking and just try a few varieties this year. See if I like them...

You didn't kill it, :) it's been a busy day. I really appreciate your input. My background, raised a mixed breed/mutt flock as a kid mostly for eggs, broodies hatched our replacements. Also raised and showed rabbits for 4-H and meat, pigs for meat, milk goats, and worked gardens for produce; my...

:) I do understand, I find the white birds beautiful, especially the Dorkings (I prefer non-single combs). Just not sure if, for me, that appeal would translate to a flock, long term.

I know you've discussed this before, but I was wondering if you could list the "easiest" colors and patterns to breed, assuming one can find a decent genetic start. I'm still trying to pick an H breed, and in my research there's been a few surprises, like the difficulties with buffs, all the...
