Quote: The ways I think you can start from the brooder is if you have birds that have weird things pop up like off leg color and combs and stuff like that. Also if you breed blue and just blue not black of a breed you can cull all of the black and splash chicks. Here are some good examples...

I also want to add, if you want to improve a breed. You can do it with fewer birds. Just know how to cull and do not be afraid to do it. Cull from the incubator on. I can hatch out 100 chicks of a kind and within a month be down to half of that or less. Of those, I try to let grow out until...

Don't overlook what Saladin has already said, and other's have stated. If you have limited space, just keep one breed. And if you have lots of space, I'd still recommend just sticking with a few breeds. Just my opinion. David

Quote: What are you talking about? There should be no tan color on penciled breeds. Pretty much they have three colors, steel gray, black pencilings and black on the tail and wing feathers, and also white lacing the feathers on the neck. David

Quote: STOP!!!! For your Orps you NEED red eyed birds. The above was about Minorcas and Spanish that require a dark brown eye. Well, Buff and White Orps are Red eyed. Black and Blue Orps are Brown eyed. He is a Black. I hate everything about him. Hate the tail, hate the chest, he is...

Quote: I dont know who these people called "they" are that look at breed descriptions and ignore the rest. The SOP is not a coloring book. Yes, shape and color are important, and probably the most important part to defining a breed. Take a flock of chickens of many different breeds, kill and...

Quote: By limiting the breeds to dual purpose you also leave out a lot of the Mediterranean breeds such as the Spanish and Andalusian, which I raise. They lay large amounts of eggs and they can be used for meat. At least for my family they are. In the beginning, almost all breeds, (I'm not...

I agree with you Dan. Even the people who own the standard ignore a lot of what's in it. They just tend to look at breed descriptions of type and color and forget about the rest. To me some of the most important parts are the 'economic qualities' and in the front of the book before the...

Quote: You may already know this, but in case you don't; remember that the barring is not like a barred rock, but instead it is very similiar to a dominique. So really the thing that needs worked on in the color is the actual color of the individual bars. Just short of positive black and...

Question I want to ask. If I were to say, recreate the Lamona or a different breed, would you still consider it the real deal, just a different strain, or would you think of it as simply a recreation and not the actually breed. A fake so to speak?

Okay, here are some pictures. To see some more pictures of my rocks (more barreds, buffs, blues, etc,) visit the Rock thread on this forum. Blue and black rock bantams. They of course, need work. A male I hatched back in 2007. He is molting as you can sort of see the feathers at the...

Now Bob, how can you say you have no club members with any blues? I raise both large and bantam blues and I know at least two others, maybe three working on blue bantams. I also have a copy of Ralph's book and so does a friend of mine. I think its a must for any serious breeder. David

I am not going to ruffle any feathers so I am not going to list what breeds I think should be heritage or not, but I think people need to quit going by the ALBC. They don't have a real clue as to what is going on with breeds and breed numbers. Also I believe that they shouldn't go by the dates...
