I realize you have seen no adverse effects, but Im not comfortable with what the long term effects can be, especially since I do eat my chickens. I try and stay as preservative free as is humanly possible. Cant escape them all, but when a homemade loaf of bread last about 2 days before turning...
I had looked into feeding FRM Feeds, since they have such a variety and really seem to have a good product. I read a tag and saw the ingredient ethoxyquin in all their feeds, and decided I just couldnt feed it. I wish they wouldnt add that, as I would love to feed it.
I have got to get a new camera. Unfortunately, mine croaked, and all the ones that I think I want are a little pricey. So save I must. I just got some white rock eggs that came from birds that Bob raised, so I am very egg-cited to get these in the incubator.

What is everyones opinion on the fertility of Heritage breeds? I know of a lot of breeders of different breeds that either breed their chickens via AI, or have to trim the vent feathers to be able to get fertile eggs. Isnt this contrary to what Heritage breeds should be about? Shouldnt they...
I see nothing wrong with the term Heritage. It means to me a breed that has been bred down for generations, which is basically what we are talking about.
Rock N' Faverolles :
I agree with you Dan. Even the people who own the standard ignore a lot of what's in it. They just tend to look at breed descriptions of type and color and forget about the rest. To me some of the most important parts are the 'economic qualities' and in the front of the...
Bob, you made a million good points in that post, but one that I want to bring up again, as I feel it is very important, is the picture of the bird in the SOP. There was a lot of time and effort in putting together the SOP, and there is a reason it is the Standard by which our birds should be...
I dont see the use of the word "Heritage" commercially. Just the nature of people nowadays, they want whats new and different and "rare". Essentially, the breeds that seem to comprise the "Heritage" list really dont fit into that catagory (well, rare maybe). I think its like anything else...
Re: "Heritage" breeds. It seems to me (and Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong) that there will be the vast majority of recognized breeds that can be considered Heritage. It would probably be a much shorter list naming the breeds that wouldnt qualify as "Heritage".
I dont know a thing about brahmas, but he's pretty as a picture. I can't imagine he's anything but what the standard would describe as perfect! Is he large or bantam?
If he is your best cockerel by far, I would match him with your best girls in temperment and type, hatch out a bunch of babies, then get rid of him. Temperment can be heredity, but I dont think it is 100%, and maybe matched with a good tempered girl, you could get his type with a more mellow...
My marans pretty much stopped over the summer, as did the Ameraucanas. The blue rocks just kept on laying like the good little girls they are. If it wasnt for them, I wouldnt have had any eggs at all.
Robert, we are so fortunate to have you here. Thank you so much for taking the time to post all the information that you have, even your fishing adventures! This is turning into one of the very best BYC threads.
Robert, could you please expound a bit further by what you mean that the blues arent in the standard. Which standard exactly are you referring to? They are listed in the SOP. Is there a standard different from the SOP?
In the SOP, it states that the Blue Plymouth Rocks were admitted to the...
