Just wanted to thank everyone on this thread. I follow this thread faithfully now and it is making me reconsider my breeding plans. I am very thankful to get this knowledge from experienced breeders. I guess I would classify myself as a chicken collector at this point. When I have come to...

Speaking of breeding decisions. i have a few Good Shepard Barred Rock cockerels growing up. They have quite a while until I make my choice. I am trying to downsize for winter and I am wondering about this guy. I assume his color is so bad that he is a cull. Should I continue to let him grow...

I feed my birds a whole seed/grain diet. My birds eat whole dent corn. I do not think you need to crack the corn. I hope to grow a lot of my grains next year so I can feed them grains still on the stalks. Good foraging!

These are very good points. I guess this would be me. I have has a tendency to pick the rare breeds. I really wanted to pick a breed that is in serious trouble. I am now beginning to understand that all well bred birds are very rare. I can be quite stubborn and I will still keep at it with...

I would love to have my birds processed. I found one place near me and gave it a try. They were caged up with a bunch of meat birds. It seemed to be very stressful for them. Their meat was tough. I have processed a few of my own birds and I think it is far less stressful for them to be...

Just stoping in. Always great conversations on this thread. Still working on raising some Crevecoeurs I have a couple batches and one being raised by a broody. They are hardy little buggers. They fly pretty well. Think I have some time before I will be able to tell what I have.

Thanks. I think they are an important breed and I look forward to improving what I have. I have an old black and white photograph of a Crev from a National Geographic magazine from 1927. I love the rooster in the photograph. I am working on getting my birds to look like that photo. Have a...

So I have decided to work on Crevecoeurs. I have my first good batch of chicks growing right now. I have treated myself with some Barred Rock chicks from Kathyinmo to try out some true heritage birds. It is just amazing to me to have birds from a line that is so old. They hatched with my...

Thank you for the comments Walt. I think the red will not be a problem since his son had no leakage at all. The ear lobe color I have no idea about. Should white ear lobes never be used? So far all the Crevs I have seen have white or whitish lobes. Do you have someone to refer me to who...

I am really enjoying this thread. I am a newbie at breeding and I am still in the process of deciding what breeds I want to work with. I plan on three breeds at the most. I plan on working with the Crevecoeurs. I raised one Crev rooster just as lawn art. I am very impressed on how hardy and...
