We always called them a darning mushroom, but a light bulb is a good substitute as you say.

How contemptibly small minded some people are. So afraid someone is getting something, no matter how trivially cheap, that they are not.

Well said DennisK! Where I live people are honest. Many cottagers leave fruit and veg on the grass verges and honesty boxes. On the odd occasion when I haven't had any change and knocked on the door they have said, 'Take it, it's fine!.' People have little but are generous to a fault. Anyone is...

Common courtesy doesn't come into this scenario. If the vineyard owner had been there, pruning his vines, of course it would be courteous to ask if he would mind you taking them, but he was not. Had he intended to use them himself as cuttings, he would not be leaving them at the road side to...

No way is this stealing. It is making sensible use of what would otherwise go to waste. Here the law says that anything that falls to the ground, on a public right of way is there for the taking!

How I agree with DennisK. My youngest daughter is newly married and I must say it is a great sadness to my husband and myself that life is so hard for young people starting out. When we married, in 1970, we were able to afford to buy a house, on mortgage, although I admit we could afford little...

May I reccommend a website called www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/ Have only just discovered it and it is full of meal ideas, menu planners and really low cost meals including vegetarian and vegan meals. A great resource!

I also have inherited old cookery books and find them absolutely fascinating. I have many of the war time recipes when food was in seriously short supply and fiercely rationed. I believe each person's ration was 2 oz of sugar a week, not a lot to cook with. Everyone was forced to live very...

I love that wood stove, and the other one as well. How cosy and comforting it must be and after all, what can go wrong with these appliances as opposed to modern electric cookers that go wrong all the time and are repaired a great expense.

What a wonderful story I am most impressed by your determination and enterprise. We all need to be more like this these days if we are to survive this economic downturn with grace and humour. Respect to you!

You are so right about old cars. We have always had them, no matter how much money has been available to update them, my husband would be mortified to not run a car into the ground. Japanese ones are great because they run forever. Also we have had landrovers which you can practically fix with a...

The trouble with buying in bulk, I find, is that there is too much money tied up in groceries. It may be cheaper to buy a box of 20 tomato ketchup, but how long would it take to eat it? Also, unless you are very firm about portion size, you may use it up faster because there is plenty available...

Thank you so much for the recipe wwmicasa1, I will certainly try that. I do have a slow cooker and I love caramelised onions. If I want to bottle some do I need to cover with a layer of oil, and how long would they keep? would they need to be kept in the fridge? Can't wait to try this!

Thank you for the suggestion of dehydrating the onions. I haven't a dehydrator, didn't even know there was such a thing as a domestic size dehydrator, but I will certainly try the oven idea. The medieval English ate braised onions daily, so it's back to the future for us!

My son walked in with a sack of onions. 'Look mum, I got you these, they were on offer, only £1.'I was speechless, Generally there is only two or three of us so a sack of onions needs some thought. So far I have roasted them, made French onion soup and put a lot in pasta sauce. No room in the...
