I made a new thread!! Enjoy. I'll post more soon, including photos of the NEW COOP! :) https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/the-adventures-of-featherdust-flock.1205867/
Part of why I have been gone is that I used to spend hours a day sometimes in the Diseases and Cures thread, trying to help people when I was able. I realized after a while that it was very draining and sad... hard to see people lose beloved birds and to see them get sick, especially since I've...
Hello again Derperella fans!
I have news. Some good, some sad.
Derperella continues to do well in the house, and has periods of time where she can hold her head pretty straight! We even considered re-introducing her to the flock, but after several attempts, it turns out that Derp is a warrior...
Let's see if I can spam you all with some photos to make up for my long absence! I regret that I don't have time to do pretty editing and re-sizing on them, so you get the raw deal off of my cellphone!
I don't have too many recent Derperella photos. It's been dreary and I can't take her outside...
Good grief! Sorry everyone. Life has been pretty awful on a personal level for me lately. In terms of my flock, though, everyone is quite well, including Derperella! She's had no changes since I last posed. She's still in the house, as happy as can be... upside-down and backward! She recently...
Nothing much to update on, but I will try to get some photos soon! It's very hot out this week and the hens (Derp included) are not very excited about posting for photos until it cools off a bit.
Derp fans, thank you so much for caring! The folks interested in Derp has dwindled over the years, and I admit that I lost track of keeping up with this thread because of the silence.
Derp is doing well! We purchased a large pet "corral" for her to stay in when we can't be home with her. The...
She has gotten very good and finding her way around (mostly by walking backward, because that's the direction her face is pointed when she is relaxed!), and eats and drinks totally on her own. She likes to stay on "her towels" area of the floor, unless she is feeling lonely, and she will wander...
I do sincerely think Derperella is improving, it's just very slow! Wry neck problems can be quite slow to heal, no matter what the cause.
Here is a photo of Derp in her most "upright" pose, which she could not do a month ago. She can only hold this pose for a few seconds before her neck and...
Hi Derp fans! I was just thinking about you. Derp is doing well... if she is improving, it's too slowly for me to notice. It does seem that she holds her head upright more often but maybe I am being wishful. Monday and Tuesday were exceptionally warm for March days and we had all the chickens...
She is the same as she has been! No improvement, yet. With wry neck, though, it can take a long time to improve I understand. When she had it as a chick, it took weeks (though it was not near this severe). She is very cuddly though, and wants 'hugs' often!! She gets lonely if I go out of sight...
I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to paint more chickens...! I regret that I am currently super backlogged though, and with galleries breathing down my neck (figuratively). Part of this Duck Stamp thing is painting Remarques. Those are tiny, original paintings in the margin of select prints. They need to be...
Yikes, there are times I am seriously considering it. This trip with Derp was over $300, and I am still stinging from trying to save our parrot Gorbash this past fall. Still, I knew what I was getting into with these birds, and I am responsible for them.
I wasn't ready for a house chicken! I really need to get a diaper for Derp (Derper.. Diaper...). Does anyone have any good recommendations?
I also have to pause frequently to make sure Derp is pointed in the right direction. She prefers to walk backward right now, which gets her stuck in weird...
Still at vet (Derp is all done, we are just helping out). Derp is as okay as can be, with possible head trauma. We have some good anti-inflammatory meds! No signs of illness or timors. We did full blood panels and chemistry: she is healthy!
If it turns out that this is survivable (I think it is) and she just needs to become a house chicken, so be it. She is generally happier outside, but, ever since Coho died she has not had a 'chicken buddy' and isn't very invested in the rest of the flock. Maybe I will get her a hen serama friend...
