    good post! just wanted to add: a whole variety of perfectly harmless snakes will sometimes vibrate their tailtips, making a rattling noise against leaves etc, when threatened - not just rat snakes. Another useful thing to know is that if it is glossy-shiny, it ain't poisonous, not in North...
