    The Rhodebar thread!

I was fresh from the shower in my bare feet and bathrobe LOL, if I'd had a chance to grab a gun or a couple of the dogs the coyote would no longer be here. I wasn't sure what all the barking was about until I got out there, then it was to late to grab something. As it was by the time I got up...

Thank you. He's actually a Pioneer, not a Rhodebar, but considering the color similarities I figured this might be the best place to get an answer regarding the genetics. Unfortunately I am without Rhodebars at this time, had some major predator problems and all of them were slowly picked off...

    The Rhodebar thread!

Hoping this isn't to off topic, I figure it could be educational for the Rhodebar people from a genetics standpoint. From being in this thread I know this is where I'm going to find the most informed people regarding these colors/markings, so I'm hoping a few will chime in. This is NOT a...

    The Rhodebar thread!

Does anyone in Southern California have quality RIR or Rhodebar pullets/hens available? We had an incident over the weekend and dogs killed over half of my chickens, including all my Rhodebar pullets. My roosters were all in a "bachelor pen" and are fine, but if I don't find some girls to pair...

It could be a BLRW, they can go through some really funky feather patters on the way to getting proper lacing. If it's a Rhodebar, it lacks auto-sexing characteristics. This is one of my BLRW around 6 weeks old that has very similar patterns to your chick. A front shot of the same chick...

This is the one who had kind of that laced look originally, similar to the one I posted above, correct? Interesting seeing how she matured, she definitely looks barred now. Definitely pays with these birds to get photos of them throughout their "childhood" if you are buying adult birds.

These are recent pics of the bird I was calling "partridge". The pattern has been breaking up, and I am seeing some barred feathers but ... Is there any potential benefit to a test breeding with one of the Rhodebar roosters? She was not easily autosexing at hatch, but it sounds like she may...

    The Rhodebar thread!

So chances are this guy is Co/Co And this guy is Co/Co+ ? So using the top rooster with my hens (Co/co+) I should get both Co/Co and Co/co+ which I can cull, and keep just the Co/Co. Even if the top rooster is Co/co+ (doesn't show in the photo, but I think he does have a little...

OK that makes sense. How would I tell with a Rooster?

So how do I determine if they are Co/co+, Co/Co, or co+/co+ ?

Would it just be obtained by culling, or would I need to bring in other birds to add it?

Quote: She was not barred, although her pattern is breaking up to the point of starting to look that way. I can see why if someone bought the birds as young adults they might include one like her in their program and not realize it wasn't really a barred bird. She was also unable to be...

    The Rhodebar thread!

My Rhodebar pullets, 6 months old now and filling out nicely. One thing I like about these Rhodebars, they grow fast. My cockerels are in a bachelor pen for now, but they are almost as large as my mature Roosters. I'm going to pull my best cockerel out and put him with these hens. The beauty...

LOL Didn't even think of the obvious :-) Good idea.

    The Rhodebar thread!

At what age do Rhodebars normally start laying? I know my roosters have hit sexual maturity, (about 5.5 months old now) they are harassing the heck out of my hens and are going to have to be removed from the flock soon. I have quite a few "teenagers" now of various breeds and my male/female...

    The Rhodebar thread!

It depends. If I am just going to feed the dogs, all I do is butcher the chicken then usually cut the flight feathers off. My dogs will consume the rest and pluck off any other feathers they don't feel like eating. The only issue I have found feeding them like this is if they do eat any...

    The Rhodebar thread!

Does anybody know of an HRIR breeder in California or Arizona? I live near San Diego. I could have a few chicks shipped to me, but I'd rather try to find something 5-12 months old and go pick it up. I don't want to deal with shipping eggs since I haven't had the best luck in that department...

He is 5 months old. Hatched late Nov. 2013. The two barred hens in my photos are the only two Rhodebar hens I have right now.

    The Rhodebar thread!

I'm not sure what the original stock for my birds is, and if it's GFF how many generations removed. I purchased the chicks locally, but the eggs initially came from dmrippy so she could better answer that question. I have plenty of solid colored birds (Buff Orp, Blue Orp, White Leghorn, Black...

    The Rhodebar thread!

Thanks, that's good to know, I was getting a little bummed :-) I'm not set up right now to really work on any sort of project seriously, so the idea of having to do a bunch of hatching to try to get a double barred Rooster wasn't sitting well.
