Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Okay, Fred, that series of pictures you put up has me convinced. Wow. I'm going to show that to my husband to help explain the difference to him.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Morning, everyone! I missed a lot of stuff while I was out going errands. Thanks to everyone who offered advice about finding birds. Al, I'll definitely take you up on your offer at some point, I appreciate it! I took a peek at the Heritage threads and will be diving in whenever I can plan to...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have always loved Rocks, ever since I was a kid. I have BRs (hatchery) right now and love them. I'm interested in Partridge Rocks too, as well as Dominique. I foresee Runner ducks in my future, too, but that's a different story. Okay, now I'll step away from monopolizing the thread!

This is great, thank you! Oh yeah, forgot about winter. It's that thing you northerners get, right? Maybe, just maybe, it will freeze hard enough to kill all the bugs this year. *crosses fingers*

"How do I get some of these birds you ask ??? they are out there all over the place, you just have to look beyond your hatchery nose. Shoot !!! go down the road or out to the country for a Sunday drive and see flocks raised by people who don't even know Hatcheries exsist, that's where" Al and...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

One of my big questions now is: how do I find non-hatchery DP stock that doesn't cost $100 / chick? Or is that a going rate? I've spent a lot of time over the last three days trying to find sources, but without very much luck at all.

Bee, maybe everyone's just sheepish after being schooled. :)

This would be so beneficial to me. Pictures and discussion about traits, etc. I know this takes up a lot of y'all OTs' time, but it is so helpful.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

My take on the quiz: I would probably take egg-laying into big consideration before doing anything, but if we're going just on the visual...if I had to pick one to keep it would be #1. I like her body shape better. It's really hard to tell because of not knowing how they look when they're...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Y'all have been so helpful and as someone else said, these posts have been really interesting! I hope everyone continues to post pictures of their birds and keeps pointing out what makes them better. It really helps to have someone walk me through it like that. Sounds like what I need to do is...

Bee, when you say you get replacements, what do you do? Eggs, chicks, what source, etc?

Fred, thanks for posting that roo and the illustration you posted yesterday. It really helps me get it! The barring is very crisp and uniform, isn't it?

The first BR is pretty alert, and so is one of the red boys whose pic I didn't take because even to my untrained eye I can tell his body isn't the right shape. I feel like they will fill out a bit more, but nothing like those Fred posted down below--wow!

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Hmm, well, I was thinking of starting this spring, February or so (I'm in Florida, so there's this sort of week or 10 days of spring weather about then, ha ha). I did read on another forum that you shouldn't use pullet eggs for incubating, so maybe that's a no-no, I don't know. I will...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Okay, here are the pictures of my roosters. Please don't laugh--I've only been at this for less than a year and the prevailing philosophy about raising chickens in my rural area is that if you're doing anything more than ignoring them completely, you're being ridiculous! Here is the first of my...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

That sounds like a great idea, Fred! I really appreciate it. It might take me a day or two to get some good pictures, but I'll post them as soon as I can. Getting help from y'all will be a great antidote to my mom's advice: "oh, that one's so cute! You HAVE to keep that one!" :) And Maven...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Hi OTs and OT appreciators! Just wanted to say this thread has totally revamped my outlook on raising chickens and I really appreciate it. Would you all mind laying some wisdom on me about my upcoming culling? I have 22 chickens, half of which are RIR and half Barred Rock (from a small local...
