That one is a golden cuckoo Marans x Easter egger, ie mutt, the Marans is probably where the chest comes from. I'm liking him, hadn't looked at him closely since he went in the cockerel pen but he's filled out in the last month. Nice thing about taking pics.

Bee and Fred (and anyone else!) I'd really like to know if you think any of these cockerels are worth keeping for a utility flock. I'm wanting to have some free fertilized eggs to practice with my Christmas incubator I hope to find under the Christmas tree. Note current flock is just a grab bag...

Another big thank you to the OTs on this thread. I'm mostly a learner/lurker but I really appreciate the down-to-earth real world advice and ideas on this thread. Can't help but learn here, keep it coming.

Walt is this what you meant a few weeks ago by a flat lower chest? This is exactly what I was picturing vs the rounded chest on the first bird.

I thought of rats but no signs and I planted a few store bought eggs which have been untouched. So unless they have discerning tastes...:P must add of the 16 only 7 were confirmed layers, 4 pullets 3hens, I think the other pullets were still just "thinking about it". Hopefully no two-legged...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Weights are good, no signs of creepy crawlies. Feed "should" be good, the feed store I use grows and mills their own products and I had a long talk with them re seed sources, growing methods, additives, etc after I kept catching my son helping himself to the pellets. I did catch a...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thanks. I only have three hens, lost 5 to coyotes earlier this year. Two molted early and completed regrowth about a month ago, one is just now regrowing her tail feathers. One of the early molters actually laid through her molt and was the last to quit as things slowed down, I was happy to see...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I did actually have a chicken question :P. Back in chickens a few years, mixed mostly hatchery layer flock of 16 hens and pullets. I switched to a 19-20% all purpose poultry feed mid/late summer when I integrated everyone, easier than worrying about multiple types of feed. They also get oyster...

Catching up on a few days of lurking but just had to say I'm a 40 something mom and my son loves to bake. Admittedly cookies and cupcakes (from scratch) are his favorites, but he also makes a mean French toast. I do have to help with measurements and make sure we don't get too many shells in the...
