And why it has such a large readership. Thank you.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Oh the time we have wasted sorting sorting through the lumber!!! At this point, I'm just getting back into chickens (we kept them when I was a kid) and learning about the different breeds. I just have hens for eggs and enjoyment now, but am interested in the preservation of heritage breeds (a...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thank you for sharing this information. I have been reading this thread and some of the heritage threads and have learned so much, but I often find it difficult to get a good idea about a breed in general because people rarely state the source of the birds. Hatchery vs heritage vs SQ vs hobby...

I always thought you were supposed to trim the toenails before applying the nail polish!

Thank you, Brie. "The Bench" was really great and "When I Was a Kid" brought back many happy memories.

I remember the sense of joy and elation some years ago when saying goodbye to the last baby diaper. Can't imagine purposely bringing diapers back for any reason!

My feed store gave bad advice too. Said to start feeding layer at 8 weeks to get the girls "ready" to lay. Glad I had read this thread first!

Disclaimer- not an old timer here. Call them in a consistent way whenever delivering treats. They will be conditioned to come to "here chickie" even if you don't have goodies for them. Mine run over to the fence just to check any time I get near. (Although I'd rather think they're coming...

Ha! Another nifty idea which I actually learned while watching Survivorman on the tube. Thanks for the reminder!

Thank you for this idea. Have been considering the idea of tarping my run for the rainy season, but was concerned about water pooling. There's lots of time before the rain starts, so I've been keeping this problem on a back burner in my brain, but thanks to sharing your wonderful advice, I now...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

This issue came up with my mother-in-law who would constantly run around after her grand kids with a wet cloth to wipe their hands. I tried to explain that a little dirt helps prevent allergies (there are studies!) but she thought I was crazy. Well, we kept the peace, but my guys got to be...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thank you very much indeed. The tip about decoy eggs will definitely be used, as my pullets are all the same age and there are no mature hens to show them the ropes. I certainly have noticed how much they learn from each other. One decides to see what it's like up in the apple tree, so three...

I was hoping for some advice, but I think my post got overlooked. Could anyone look at post #3296 on page 330? Thanks

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have just finished reading the first 50 pages of this post. Only 280 more pages to go!!?? By the time I finish reading to look for an answer to my question, it will be too late! (Sorry if this is a repeat.) Is there a way to tell when a pullet is about to start laying? I'm asking because...
