Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

In simply accounting there is an inventory section. You can do it that way. Can't advise you on quickbooks. Adjust inventory as you sell. You can print invoices for clients. I've been working with it for 8 years, so it's second nature to me.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

My Buff Toulouse, Mottled Houdan and Barred Plymouth Rock. Next year we are having Nationals locally. I'm really excited about it. :) Also note that waterfowl do not need to be banded or vaccinated here to be shown.

It's only 1 eyedrop vaccine (for ILT). No testing required. It requires very little effort to register birds for show here. Fill out and done. They don't even ask for your band number, though judges check to ensure they are banded, though they don't check if it's current (wish they would).

Good to know. Here we get banded and appropriate vaccinations for free. Only province in Canada that does.

Will toe punching get points deducted if you show your birds?

You're old schooling it! Nothin' wrong with that. I have an apple computer and keeping track of ages is so easy. Hard to keep track of papers at home. I have a fiance that likes to throw out papers (or burn them).

I just want to break even Fred. That's it. I highly enjoy breeding, and will continue to do so. I'm already saving a bundle just by starting to ferment my feed. 100 lbs a week in savings.

Delisha, I am great with programs. Cheapest to use is probably Google Docs. It's right there and saves automatically. I like it. However, I keep track of most stuff on an actual financial program. It's quicker in my opinion than a spread sheet. You have different accounts for different...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Fred, I do the same, but with Simply Accounting. As an accountant, Quickbooks is not my favourite. You need to break everything down into certain categories. You are doing a great job by reading how you keep track. Keep it up! How many years did it take you to break even, or to make a...

Quote: Thanks Wynette - I know all that editing must have been tiresome. Some newbs (like myself) really do know more than some people give us credit for. Some of the advise here is wonderful. I am glad it's back and I hope it stays around.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: I'm with Deerman, keep records! lol Chickens have been in my family for generations. This is the poultry house my grandfather and mom raised chicken used back in the 40s. They hatched, grew them out, plus eggs and sold them to restaurants along the train line. So as I am an old...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: I just mentioned on here that I started letting my 8 month old cat outdoors, and someone FLIPPED out on me. Like I am an awful person for allowing my cat to get wild animals (song birds and what not), but my cats take care of any unwanted rodents. Cats should be allowed outside if they...

Quote: Halo--I was wondering that very same thing! What a great shot! Aoxa--I would just leave it alone. Old folks are pretty set in their ways...he probably "knows" it by now but it would embarrass him to admit he was wrong to his Grandaughter. If he believes it it certainly doesnt change...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Can I just mention something? My grandfather (in-law) is 80+ years old and worked with chickens from the time he could walk (honestly, the buildings were jammed packed with chickens. He said 40,000 +) and he INSISTED that you NEED a rooster to produce eggs. He got very angry at me when I told...

Quote: Oh come on now... the natural history of chickens has one good point.... my Husband laughed so hard at the lady that kept that poor silky roo as a pet. She even swam with him in the pool with daily blow drying and car rides. It was awesome! To hear him laugh that is... I know right...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have spent an hour or so reading this thread. Very good information. Though I do name my chickens for ease of ID - as Speckledhen mentioned. I wanted to mention a documentary I watched called the natural history of chickens. It was so pathetic I laughed until I cried. Nothing natural about...
