    i'm pretty new to chickens. i have one each of barred rock, buff orpington, silver laced wyandotte, and black australorp. i really like all four breeds. they are "heavy" breeds so aren't as flighty, good temperment, and should give me good eggs (not yet). they make a really pretty flock...

    i'm late getting back to say thank y'all for explaining more about fermented & mash feed. i'm definitely going to educate myself more on this so i can use it for my chickens. heat is a real concern for me & this will be my first summer w/chickens. something to help keep them hydrated makes...

    fascinating posts. even those who are disagreeing w/each other have good information. i really like Fred's brooder trailer and the three lights. i'm a very little operation & i brooded in the garage in a converted rabbit hutch. if i had used two lights (not room for three - but three is...

    so much great info and perspective. this helps a novice like me get off to an optimistic start. i am excited about my life with chickens, but it is a new realm for me. i'm familiar w/ wild animals & big predators. i understand cat's & dog's mentality, but i have never been around livestock...

    struggling w/ two questions 1.bird safety in run (uncovered)...would chickens make use of a dog 'igloo' for safety in the event of hawk attack? i just don't know their instincts yet and how they react to danger. is leaving the pop door open during the day a good safety net? are old...

    when y'all refer to creating places for chickens to hide from hawks, what kind of cover do you provide. my run is not covered & isn't readily visible, but once a hawk finds it, the chickens won't have safety. planting shrubs doesn't seem feasible, so i'm guessing i need to come up with...

    JenellYB; i hope you keep those mcmansion builders at bay for a very long time. i was wondering about the line crisscrossed over the top to discourage hawks. i may have to try that. thanks

    Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

    having no personal point of reference, i made my breed choice based on descriptions here on byc. i was looking for dual purpose with reasonable dispositions, and not likely to fly (because of my coop/run environment). i chose buff orpington, barred rock, black australorp, & silver laced...

    i'm the complete newbie. i read the predators part of the forum. can y'all put it in perspective for me? by reading it i feel as though my chickens will be under attack 24/7. is that how it will be (my first ever babies are coming next wk)? thanks;
