when it comes down to it, you must protect your family and livestock no matter what stupid laws that are put on the books. it sounds like the cops where you live have some common sense and know how to deal with the public. there are other cops who take sadistic pleasure in seeing good people...

10 chickens a year! how many do you have ? 500? a predator may kill a couple, you may lose a couple to unknown disease or genetic attrition but i would feel like i wasn't doing a very good job of chicken management if i had losses like that. when i first got my cubalayas they were a little small...

yes put your wood ashes where the chickens can dust themselves. you can mix a little de or sevin dust in too. we paint our roosts with burnt motor oil for scaly leg mites. al, i thought you were running that rooster rescue where people could come out and hug a chicken. have you hugged your...

i have had coons on my back porch and in my trash but so far they have left my chickens alone. the walker hound that i have guarding them is probably why. my neighbor was wiped out numerous times by coons, stray dogs, weasels and bobcat. he didn't have a dog.

i dont heat or insulate. in fact my coop has pretty good airflow that doesn't allow moisture to build up in cold weather. i have had no problems with frostbite and all my roosters are fertile. i dont allow too much manure to build up where they roost. i put it in a compost pile for the gardens...
