You could always call around to see if they have duck at your local stores before taking a trip there. We have a store in our area that sells ducks and the going rate is about $19.00.

You are surely right about no problems with drowning, fouling and knocking over the water. ;)

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I've always been afraid to use poultry nipples. Afraid that the chicks/chickens won't get enough water and die. :hide

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I ordered 40 RIR chicks from Ideal last week and when they arrived they were 2 days old. I debated about the temps (reading so many posts about 100 degrees and then (-5 degrees), 95 degrees then the 2nd week and on and on and on) with the heat lamp but since they were inside (in the garage)...

Quote: I agree. I have about 7 feral cats that have been living at my place for years. I find a LOT of dead animals at the back door.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: Thanks for the info about the RIRs. I narrowed my layers down to RIRs as well. What hatchery has the "best" RIRs? I just ordered 40 from Ideal. The next state over to me and I could get the chicks in a day or 2. I ordered all pullets, so I will need a rooster from a different...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: Start with the best RIR`s you can find. Make sure the rooster is of a different bloodline. Then you can keep the same flock for a good 4 years. When prduction slows down to an unacceptable level, then you hatch some of your own eggs. Keep only the pullets from this hatch and after their...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: What ever was around the property when we built them.... We picked landscaping poles sort of round with 2 flat sides and made ladders. We are not real fancy, but have healthy happy chickens. The 2 hen houses and pens this morning with the girls wanting out of the runs, there is a...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Fred's Hens : Brooding Brooding outside was completely natural for centuries. Mother hen broods outside. I've never brooded inside the house in 50 years. People today are almost shocked to hear that, while Old Timers are shocked to think folks would brood in the own bedroom. With a 250watt...

Fred's Hens : Quote: I won't see the photos without permission, but here's an antique sellers website: http://yosemiteantiques.com/item204.html Weird that stuff as common as dirt when you were young are now high priced "antiques"!!!! Love it! Thanks for posting.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Is it possible for the old timers to post pics of the "old timer's" chicken feeders, waterers and nesting boxes for everyone to see? Sometimes I can't figure out some of the feeders that look like NASA space shuttles and the waterers that look like fixtures from an amusement park or water park...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: How many chickens do you have? I don't do anything extra for the girls when they slow down on laying eggs. I allow their bodies to do what it needs to do without treating them like a vending machine. I let nature take it's course. I am not a fan of providing extra light for eggs...
