I don't believe that is the going rate, at least not in the breeds that interest me. What breeds interest you?

May I suggest the following breeds: rocks, wyandottes, orpingtons, australorps, leghorns, brahmas, cochins, rhode island and new hampshire reds, cornish and polish? Although I am not sure it will be easy to find good examples of these, they do seem to be popular offerings among the hatcheries...

Hi, Al! I understand the age/breed/cooking skill part of your comment, but can you elaborate on the method(s) of processing you have found most likely to produce tender, flavorful chicken? Please? Thanks, Angela

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I've been listening, Al!! I trained my chickens to eat Calf Manna-at first they wanted nothing to do with such strange food. And my husband is a big bacon lover, so the chickens get a regular dose of bacon grease on their table scraps-which I figure is pretty close to lard. After I started...

I agree, my father used to use these to warm baby pigs. somehow we wound up using them on large orders of baby chicks one year. Ours ran off butane, though. Angela

as for the acorn question-some species of oaks, such as white oak and bur oak have acorns that are low in tannins, (so should be less bitter,) I believe the settlers/frontier folk made acorn flour from those. Angela

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Let me clarify my earlier post. I most certainly did NOT mean to imply that a big, white, rescued dog which appeared to be of livestock guarding ancestry, should be entrusted with anyone's flock. I apologize to anyone who thought I meant that. What I meant was that sometimes known, proven...

Another good site is http://www.lgd.org/ . If you are seriously considering training 2 puppies simultaneously, please read the stories of the Daemon sisters first. You may be able to find an LGD who needs a new home from a rescue operation, including petfinder.com.

Bee, don't you just love watching the lambs "scare" the chickens? I nearly fell off my bucket seat laughing the first time I saw them do that, and it's still funny, all these years later. I have a question for you OT's-does a crow-headed chicken ever turn into a well-proportioned chicken? I...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Dear Brie, I am not a chicken OT, but I do have several Livestock Guardian Dogs protecting my sheep, who are also poultry-friendly. (Actually, the sheep and dogs are both poultry-friendly. The lambs love to sneak up behind a chicken then snort/blow a puff of their breath into the fluff under the...

Thank you, Walt! I appreciate a straightforward answer, even when the answer is "it depends." My extra ducks have an appointment with the butcher later this month, so I want to distinguish ducks from drakes by then. As I was scrutinizing the poultry yesterday, I believe I could hear both...

I need to ask a quick question about ducks, please. At what age will my Ancona drakes grow curly tail feathers or experience the "voice change"? I tried asking the Ancona duck thread, with no replies so far. BTW, Anconas are supposed to be medium weight ducks per Mr. Holderread. Thanks, Angela

gosh! a lot of things happened while I was away! Therapydoglady, I pray that your remaining days are as comfortable, dignified and joyful as possible. regarding acorns, some species produce bitter acorns (post, black and red oaks) some produce relatively sweet acorns (white and bur...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Dear OTs, Can you please refresh my memory? What time of year should I re-assess the older layers in my flock to determine whether they are laying or just fattening up for my next pot of chicken and dumplings? As I recall, at about 2 years of age the hens will stop laying, molt, then resume...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

ummm......gee. my chickens and ducks love Flock Raiser by Purina. The hens wouldn't eat the Layena and flat out stopped laying rather than eat it, but the ducks are not so picky. Of course, all my birds are free ranging on ~ 1 acre of pasture, mostly medium red clover, so they get all the...

The way my husband (head cook in this household,) overcomes the difficulty of peeling fresh-laid, hard-boiled eggs is by adding a very generous amount of vinegar to their water before boiling. Example, 1 dozen fresh eggs, 1.5-2 cups of vinegar, cover with 1-2" of water, boil, cool and peel. The...

I am not an old-timer, but had to contribute on this issue of feeding fishy feed to your chickens. BE VERY WARY OF FEEDING THIS TO YOUR LAYING HENS!!! When I was a child, one or two of our laying hens got into the catfish feed pellets and produced eggs that tasted like long-dead fish. I only...
