Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Same here in NH. No matter what time of year, or the weather, the power goes out at least once a week. I've given up on resetting the clocks on every dang appliance I own. It's an endless project. I've been doing like JeffOeuf - bringing the waterer in at night if it's going to get well...

Fred- Thanks so much to you and all the OT's for yesterday's quiz. I really look forward to more chicken university! Back to lurking and learning... Oh, and Walt, I'm a University administrator. Hear ya about chicken antics being a good antidote!

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Fred, could you expound a bit on what you do for prevention? From what I've read here I'd be wary of introducing someone else's birds to my flock. All of mine came from the hatchery this spring, and appear to be bug free. What are your tips for keeping them that way?

Big dog. Sleeping on the couch. Not remotely grumpy, although I worry she might not be comfortable enough. Might need to move that pillow. Yep, totally spoiled. But she keeps a close eye out on the chickens from the sofa during the day.

I'm with you Bruce. I like my dogs dog sized. If I want something little to curl up in my lap, I've got cats. That said, I've met some great little dogs over the years, and mostly, they come with great owners. When I got my first dog many years ago, someone gave me some very good advice...

It's bad if you visualize silkies in sequened chicken diapers singing the chorus.

With apologies to Bobby B, and his wonderful Supremes reference: You can't hurry eggs No, you'll just have to wait They'll lay when they're ready No matter how you fuss and pace How long must I wait For some eggs on my plate The nest box is empty Every time I check each day Oh I can't...

Mine stayed holed up on their coop for about 24 hours after what I suspect was a hawk chased them all into hiding this past weekend.

Ya gotta wonder sometimes. Craigslist posting from NH: "We are selling our beautiful, tame, laying flock of 6-8 month old (varied ages, all from this spring's hatch) chickens. Two of them are Bantam Lace Cochens (a gorgeous pair, rooster and hen, and my pride and joy), one is a Lace Cochen...

Wow, that's one determined falcon. My neighbor has game cams out and said we have a lot of grey fox in the area, and some fishers. Seems odd that they would be out mid day though. Haven't seen any hawks or owls of late, but I know they're out there. Doesn't matter much in the end I suppose...

Same here and I was going to post about some of the the things I've observed but had a predator situation yesterday. Background: I have mixed flock of 7 birds. Four (BO, BB, a Dixie Rainbow and my good EE Roo, are about 26 weeks old. I also have 3BRs that are about 20 weeks. My...

Quote: Maybe mine is the exception that proves the rule. He's friendly, respectful to me and toward his flock, and keeps a good eye out when they're roaming the yard. Hasn't hassled the ladies at all, of course that could be because they're all bigger than he is.

Sort of. One of my dogs loves to eat them and leaves lots of broken ones around. Some of my chickens clean up her leftovers!

x2 As a newbie, I've learned a lot from this site in a short period of time and am getting a sense for when I might be leaning towards doing something silly. All I have to do is say to myself "these are chickens, and chickens have survived 4000 years without [fill in the blank]" and I snap...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Hi OTs, I’m brand new to raising chickens and in general don’t do well with fussy, high maintenance things. I was so happy to find this thread and confirm my suspicion that my chickens would survive without electricity, indoor plumbing, central heating, a personal chef, a wardrobe and group...
