Yes they do get bigger, noticably almost daily.
My RIR's have gone from tiny to large size in 2 weeks, sex links are jumbos started large took a week to go jumbo, barred rock large from tiny took three weeks , ambers xlarge took a week started med-large

My girls (all 8) finally reached POL. Season premier was 8/4/12 @ 17 weeks 6 days of age
and ended 9/19/12 @ 24 weeks 4 days old.

That is not extremely late, are they hatchery production birds? If not some of the heritage breeds are a bit later I think. My production RIR's just started laying last week at 22 weeks, I would definetly check the yard or observe them to see if they are laying elsewhere, mine started laying...
