OK so someone in this thread at some point suggested food color the hens vent to know who was laying what..... that I did today. I have 3 hens that lay almost the exact same looking egg LOL
so I had my 12 year old daughter help me.... OMG I was laughing so hard after that I about peed my pants...
well one of my younger girls started laying yesterday. I knew she would be ready to start laying in December but I figured that due to not as much sunlight in the day she would wait until spring. The egg she laid today is SO beautiful.
The egg is real small the picture just makes it look big
well my RIR, Ponderosa, i had never SEEN her lay an egg yet. I had seen everyone else but not her. so today I sat for hours with my video camera. guess what I got!
We have 6 people in our family and every sunday we have a big breakfast with all the eggs scrambled from the week. so every week we start over collecting eggs.
I have a big 36 count egg carton. I have wrote on the carton each chickens name.
Each chicken gets her own row.
I put each chicken's...
I have spent so much time sitting outside the coop watching the nest box. it has paid off. I have seen all my egg layers lay an egg. Kinda fun to see them lay an egg. I know exactly who lays what now.
I have only live where I live right now for about 3 months. I don't know any neighbors and none of them even know I have chickens. not to mention my back yard is privacy fenced and the gate has a lock on it...
I didn't give an age for her.... she is I am taking from what I was told when I got her a week ago that she is close to 2 years. I got her from a nest box so she was about to lay an egg... how ever I have had her for a week today and still no eggs from her... I am thinking about taking her...
the left 4 are Rotunda's eggs from 5 days. The middle 5 are Poderosa's eggs. The Right 4 are tender's eggs
and these are pictures of my new dominique hen Ellanore.
I know exactly who is laying what now. My RIR, Ponderosa lays the most often she gives 2 eggs in a 24 hour time frame she lays the fat brown eggs, Tender my mix breed lays the lighter colored fat eggs. My Barnivelder, Rotunda lays long skinny dark brown eggs. her eggs you can never tell the top...
they are fairly decent sized huh? I never even thought about it before you said that. I'm so wrapped up in who is laying what that I haven't even taken the time to appreciate the size of the eggs LOL
Answers:
1. yes. a chicken will set on any ones egg... even a fake egg.I have a chicken that will sit on anything. LOL
2. She may not feel the need to sit on eggs or in the box except for when she is laying an egg. I have chickens that plop their egg out and leave... they only go in the nest...
OMG just when I think I know who is laying what I go to check the nest and there is a WHITE EGG! I don't have any white egg layers.... I have 3 hens that are laying they all lay brown eggs one of those lays a tan egg but not even close to white I have a rooster who can't lay eggs of coarse and I...
I had to removed my fake eggs or my RIR Ponderosa the best layer will just sit on them all day. Ponderosa is so possessive of her eggs too. she tries to attack me when I get near the nest. However she SO sweet when not on her nest defending eggs against I the egg thief. LOL ALSO after I have...
I love the food coloring idea! My younger ones are not acting like they are laying. well I only have 2 younger ones and 1 is a rooster and the other is just too small still doesn't even have her wottles or comb yet.
they are sneaky LOL I started out fresh too thinking yes I am going to know who laid what. first thing in the morning I had the lightest egg and I know my mix Tender laid it she is my only 1 to lay light eggs. then I saw all the chickens sitting in the nest. I go to check and no eggs so no...
OK well... that solves that... the one I thought was laying eggs... is a rooster... LOL so HE for sure is not laying eggs. LOL so it looks like I have a chicken that is laying 2 eggs in a 24 hours span constantly...
Ok so the hen I have seen in the nest the most is the RIR
... BUT that girl will set on any egg. I put a fake wooden egg in there randomly today... no one near the nest at the time. I come back a few min later and she was sitting on the wooden egg. I removed the wooden egg so she wont go...
well I was looking at my eggs I have got since I started getting multiple eggs a day and I still don't think it is a new layer. I know who lays what and I only have 3 types of eggs. I have noticed my rhode island red in the nest a lot.... maybe she is laying more eggs than normal?
