It is not bad in Dominiques, in fact it is desirable. You're looking for anything BUT straight barring in Doms. You want either V-shaped, or staggered barring. Not sure about other cuckoo breeds, though.

I would love to hear more about the things you cull for at day one, or at other intervals during development. Also would definitely know if you can draw any conclusions about the yellow vs. silver head spot. Any advice you can give as to what features to look for in a day old chick that will...

Oh yes, that's familiar. I've had a few look like that! I try not to use them in the breeding pen, though. :)

Really? I've never thought of his comb as one of his strong points. If I show this photo from another angle, would you still think it a good comb? Because it seems to have hollow spots, to me:

If you find out, I'd love to know, too. I have another Dom, a hen (completely unrelated to this fellow) who backs up all the time. She eats fine, lays fine, acts normal otherwise, no other symptoms to make you think she's unhealthy. She just ... walks backwards. A lot. A friend teases me that I...

Okay, I went out in the cold and took current photos of my two breeder boys. This is that same Lily Plasse roo I posted in the 4mo vs. 7mo photo above, he's now about a year and a half old. I think his crop is full, I'm not used to him looking that lumpy on the front. And this is the roo I...

I don't have a solid answer for you as to whether it is a DQ, I do apologize. But I wanted to ask, how old is that bird? Because I know that after a couple of molts (so a 2 or 3 year old cock or older), there is a tendency in some birds for the tail feathers to become 'washed out' and appear...

Okay, my first non-hatchery Doms came from Lily Plasse. Someone mentioned before that it is hard to judge type on Dominique cockerels at an early age, and I've found this to be very true. Here's an example. This is one of of the boys I got from Lily, when he was about 4 months old. His back...

Well, I suppose I could start with the hen in my avatar. She's about the worst example of a Dominique as you're likely to find, haha! But she was my first Dominique, and she was the one who introduced us to the breed and taught us about some of the wonderful but more intangible traits of the...

Someone just told me about this thread today, so I spent a couple of hours reading every post. It's a wonderful thread, a wonderful idea. The info has been so useful, thank you to everyone who is participating. The best part is that the breed you're on now is my breed! Haha! I will have to get...
