I have a Buckeye hen "Butters" who I thought began a molt in late Fall, but it's been very slow and I'm not sure she's continuing. Her tail feathers look fairly beat, and I wonder if there is a possibility she is expressing a feather shredding gene now? Or has her molt just stopped, or maybe she...
I don't know why I only now got a notification that you replied, weird, huh? If one of these goes broody I will keep you in mind. I have never hatched before, and have no experience or equipment for it. These are my first birds. But I do like them, these Buckeyes are tame, but not lap-sitters...
I have four 16-month old Buckeyes from unknown hatchery stock. They are dears in personality, smarts and friendliness. Mine vary greatly in their physical build and in their laying frequency. I agree with @goodb from what I've read too the lines have been tinkered with for both greater meat and...
Oh, put a lot of that in there, they will love it and use them, I kept adding perches at higher heights and widths as they grew, and they used them a lot! Took away the low ones when they stopped using them. Also make sure they have landing room to jump/fly off of them and not land on anything...
My four fly up and down to and from perches, and can fly up to a perch about waist high, but won't unless there's a treat to be had. They don't generally fly very high for fun. If they had to escape a predator they could fly over a fence probably.
I have four standard Buckeyes and they are quite personable, friendly and intelligent. I have always spent time with them every day, that makes a difference. Someone I know has had bantam Buckeyes, loved their personalities too though she did not engage with them closely. However she free-ranges...
Here's my chicks, three are a little darker than they appear here, but Butters, on the top right, really is this light. I got them mail-order from My Pet Chicken, knowing nothing about lines at the time, and I wanted to try to get pullets, so didn't want to take a straight run. I would try...
Thank you so much for the information, @The Farmers' Daughter! I don't think there should be a problem keeping the hanging feeder going into December or further into the winter. I am taking it in each evening to deter rodents.
At what age will, Buckeyes be 2 pounds or more? I have four wonderful 5-week old chicks. For the WInter I will set up a treadle feeder and train them (Rat Proof Feeder http://ratproofchickenfeeder.com/Medium-Ratproof-Chicken-Feeder_p_1.html) and the seller recommended they weigh at least 2 lbs...
