My first Buckeyes came from Meyers. My Rooster was wonderful. He lost his life defending a Black Minorca from a fox. He was my husband's favorite rooster and helped us all fall in love with this breed. Our pullets from there were not as friendly and needed much handling to be okay with us being...
I wasn't so sure that I would even like Buckeyes. After the National Poultry show in Delaware my husband and I began looking for breeds that we would like to keep. Buckeye continued to come up on our list, but we never really in pursuit. While purchasing some of our other birds a place had some...
I wish that we could hatch some more Buckeyes, but I just lost my rooster last week. I thought I had a rooster in the brooder, but I do not. All chicas. What are the chances of this happening? All hatched and all girls.
We free range our mixed flock of pastured birds. So they have to be smart and hardy. I want you to know that 64% of our McMurray birds survived to Rooster and hen age while only 25% of Meyer's birds survived to that same age. 2 of the Meyer's survivors were Buckeyes.
We have used McMurray for some birds that we didn't want to pay breeders price for or nice assortments. Growing up I have seen birds from Meyer's, Strombergs, Mt Healthy and Cackle as well. I have tried Meyer's myself. McMurray's birds have always lasted.

My son is getting his 1st Buckeyes in two weeks from Meyer's Hatchery. We looked for local breeders, but most of them seem to want to hold on to their chicks. My son is a 4Her and is working with his group to help preserve the breed. We are excited and cannot wait to meet them.
