Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I have Bresse (they're not APA). They have very large combs, I was worried when it got down to 10 degrees. but they were fine. I have mostly open coop (good ventilation) with a sheltered area. I noticed that some roosters will not tuck there heads at night. I'm sure the cold is much...

I am going to do NPIP testing in a few weeks. I have the option (in South Carolina) to do AI testing as well. The AI is more cost-wise and has to be sent off to the lab and done every 6 months. Once certified, the P-T tests only needs to be re-done yearly on site with a minimal number of...

Sounds like you use the resources that are available to you. I don't see why any one should object to that. I think it's great that you can put to use items that would otherwise be wasted. I personally find it very interesting. I would love to see your setup.

Thank you NYREDS,and ALL of you for your responses. Its good to know that I can continue to have success with this system. My first trial hatch (for a friend) was 14 out of 18 including two clears removed early. I needed to know before buckeye hatches next year. I'm planning on trying the...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I've been studying on this for over a year. Got a lot of good information from helpful folks, and a few bits not so good. Learning to consider the source and circumstances. Got in some real live practice on some backyard chickens. My goal is to work with buckeyes to create a closed flock. I...

Thank you for the reply. I assume the oxine dissipates, can you close it up immediately after the light spay or do you need to wait a bit? Can one get oxine at a farm supply or TSC?

I would like to know if you used each of the 1588 Hovabators more than 6 times, and supposing from your results that you did not have issues with bacteria, how do you clean these units. Or otherwise how did you prevent problems with bacteria?

I was told that a Styrofoam Incubator will hatch bacteria better than eggs after about 6 hatches. I have used mine one time and had an 80% hatch. I really had to mind the temperature closely though. Has anyone used these type incubators extensively with good success? If so, to what do you...
