Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Thank you for the explanation. I have a bunch of unhulled seeds and was feeding small amounts of those as entertainment, mostly because they love them. Glad to hear they will not do harm.

Why use hulled sunflower seeds? I thought you could feed unhulled sunflower seeds to chickens?

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I have not given up on Brown Leghorns, especially if I could find nice rose-combed birds. They are beautiful, and I wouldn't worry about their combs as much in our winter. I probably should consider RIR, but do they feather out as fast as NH? I think I was hoping to support less common...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Well, I want my chickens mostly for eggs, but I wasn't sure I would like the leghorn temperament, so I got a mix of RCBL, NH and Barred Rocks. Turns out I like all of these breeds, but so far the RCBL are laying at 60% compared to 90% for the brown egg layers - and, of course, the dual-purpose...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

My hatchery New Hampshires and Barred Rocks are laying very well (about 90% since they started laying around 5 to 5.5 months - they are 7.5 mo. now). I lost one NH pullet to unknown cause soon after she started laying, but otherwise they all seem hearty and healthy. What is it about heritage...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Thanks for the link to the stock show. I didn't see any breeders of New Hampshires (or Delawares, another breed, I might want to try) anywhere near me in the breeders directiory.

Zanna and Wisher1000, Thanks for the lead and advice. I will start exploring the options. If anyone does know of a closer breeder, I'd be happy to hear about it. I couldn't find any in a google search and I don't know about Colorado (or NM or UT) poultry shows.

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Zanna or other New Hampshire breeders, I have my first flock of chickens (hatchery) and I had thought it too soon to get heritage chickens, but others have recommended that I try to find some heritage birds next spring. I don't think I will want to start a breeding program myself, but I would...

My hatchery New Hampshires certainly have a cushion. I understand it is not desirable for breeding to standard, but are there any functional/health reasons that a cushion is a problem? It doesn't seem like it is due to fat to me. More a feathering thing.

"There are several people on here that have nice NH. Cpartist, JWhip, Zanna, Walt, Matt1616 and more." Thanks, gjensen. Should I try contacting these folks directly, or just wait to see if they reply to my inquiry?

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I heard this is the place to go to find out about where to get heritage breeds. I am new to chickens this year. I got 3 breeds of hatchery birds this year, and I like all of them, but especially the New Hampshires. I am hoping I might be able to get some non-hatchery New Hampshires from a...
