Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I seem to worry more about the cold than my chickens do. The big coop is three-sided and I have plastic sheeting over most of the open side. With the little coop the plastic is around the run. All are dealing with the cold better than I am. The LH does have a bit of frostbite on his comb. I...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

No...that would be my big lovable, scatterbrained dork of a husband. 6'4" and he was scared of a rooster. He's also scared of snakes. Screamed like a girl first time he stepped on one in the garden. He's suburban raised, poor thing. I grew up in a more rural setting in a tiny town called...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

But I like him. I really do. He's a handful, yes, but the other BO rooster that I had became soup because he tried to kill the other BO rooster, I've never had that problem with Diego after our initial run-in. Yes they have names. They have full run of my yard and garden and it's been peaceful...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Why would I be afraid of him? He's a chicken...he weighs what? About 6 lbs? And I weigh...well, never mind about that. Now people are scary - and slugs, slugs are creeeepy.

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I believe you. This rooster and his attitude are the very reason I'm raising a flock of chickens in the first place. My husband and daughter got it in their heads that they were going to raise chickens for eggs and meat. Thick as thieves, those two - and always into something. I had no interest...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

The leghorns are...um...challanging. Diego tried to spur me once and I remembered something I had read here on byc and I began walking towards him fast and I didn't give him time to start another launch, just kept walking at him until he gave up and walked away. I never make sudden movements...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I've never been to his farm, DH found him for me. I rarely go outside my property (closet agoraphobe). DH says he had about 10 different breeds in lots of runs - Orpingtons, Araucanas LF and bantam and a few others. I'm not sure because DH prolly talked more than he listened...I love him, but...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Thanks, Karen. I do have some friends on BYC who are willing to trade some eggs this spring for some of my daylilies and peonies.

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Truly, I don't have near the experience yet to even think about breeding for standard. I'm enjoying the eggs and having a blast learning all the strange quirks of my chickens, watching them be chickens. My Grandbaby and I are both learning together. We have a little Brinsea mini eco and hatched...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Thank you so much for your answer. That's about what I was thinking, as well. Not that I'm ready to take on a project, yet...I'm not. This is only my second year with chickens and right now I'm still learning how to care for them and keep them healthy. Again, thank you for answering.

Are my Leghorns even close to type? I only have the two, but they are the only chickens I have that are not TSC. My rooster has some frostbite on his comb due to the recent cold weather.
