Who else is waiting for that first egg?

I love that pic of the pullet with the egg. That look is priceless. Cute pic with the kiddo. She looks proud holding that first eggie. Congrats on the nice assortment. It does pick up. Last winter my retired ladies quit for the entire winter. 0 Yes that is a zero eggs from September through...

I have been getting more customers lately too. I do not advertise but folks know I have hens so come a knockin. Glad I kept 32 instead of downsizing more.

http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/how-to-store-fresh-eggs-zmaz77ndzgoe.aspx#axzz3CBibHM1w This article is on long term storage of eggs. This should help keep it clear on egg storage. I figured others may want to read it too. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/947884/egg-handling...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

I usually keep mine confined until they are all laying in the nest boxes. I don't let mine free range anymore due to hawks but when I did they would go back to the box to lay eggs since that is what they were used to doing while confined. I would on occasion find an egg in the window well or...

I do say they sound like they have you trained well. Do they still holler if you give them some sort of treat in the run?

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

LOL we are all a little crazy in our own ways. We are just all gathered together being crazy in a large group this way.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

When they first start to lay it is not unusual for them to have some flukes in the system. A lot of new layers will lay soft shelled eggs for a bit before the system is up and running correctly. Patience is a virtue and they surely will try your virtue.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Kinda makes you want to frame them they are so super cute. Congrats on a second eggie. Mine are really starting to lay well. The group with 14 pullets and 7 little ole ladies had 10 eggs earlier today. Hoping for a couple more since there are 21 chickens in that group. The group of only ole...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/469317/iowa-blues-breed-thread-and-discussion/3050#post_15644393 This whole thread is about them. I got a couple when I finally found one Black Australorp for sale. I seem to always miss the Australorp when they are in. Mine are pure black. I was hoping for...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Weird to have a broody California White. They are a gray leghorn crossed with a white leghorn. Thinking they should never be broody. Always one oddball in the bunch eh? I just caught my Iowa Blue pullet in the nest box. Thinking she is now among the layers. You go Skye lay me a nice pretty...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Ok so how do you get the mixture smooth. I always struggle with that part. I love deviled eggs but mine are always lumpy. ( I am self taught on all the cooking I do) Never had a mentor or anyone teach me anything about cooking. I can make some pretty darn complicated and delish items but the...

OMG I have never seen them done up so nicely before. May have to copy your chick ones. The middle ones look to hard for me to do.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

When you find nest boxes messed with be sure and shuffle the shavings or straw around looking for eggs. The first eggs are small and can be hidden in the bedding on accident.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

To answer the question as to how long before the small pullet eggs get bigger..... These things take some time. Slowly over the 6 weeks following the first egg they will get larger and larger. Full size eggs are about 2 to 3 months out for the slacker hens. You will surely find a way to figure...

Need to make sure to lock that coop up so nothing can take the others. What a bummer to have raised them this far and loose them. Set a timer on your phone to remind you to lock the coop. At least until it becomes habit.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

The fans are pulling outside air into the coop to keep chicken dust from clogging the motors and causing a fire. Yes we freeze our bottoms off in the winter. We get down to -20 each winter for about a week and hover around 0 for a couple weeks to a month and a half. THEN we can warm up to...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Yes 95 is pretty normal here. I do not like it any more than the poor chickens. Mine pant like crazy when it is this hot. Laying is put off a bit and they let me hear about it. If they hear me come out the back door they get really loud. Neat nipple waterer. Mine have many open dishes of water...
