Growing up in Northern border towns I felt the same way. After all the moves DH and I have done it's easier to include other cities.

X2 That is a fantastic picture. Can't tell you how many times I've tried to explain that to parents who insist that their 9 year old is going to show a Moscovie duck in showmanship.

Nice video but they tend to be regional. We show breastbone differently, width of abdomen, vent, width of pubic bones. Our kids also do a lice/mite check under each wing. There is a great 4_H Poultry book that gives step by step on showing, it also has instructions on bathing birds for show. I...

I wish I had pictures Ron. They are on my old tablet that crashed and I haven't been able to get to them through the cloud. My excuse for driving 5 1/2 hours to look at chickens is now close to finishing Cosmetology school and expected to graduate in December. The Modesto/Stockton show is in...

Nankins are another good little breed, they have both rose and single combed varieties. They do not require dubbing unlike OEG's males. Nankins are known for their brooding abilities, and can get quite protective of eggs and chicks. I don't see that as a bad trait though. If I have to deal...

Exactly on point centralcalgirl. 4-H showmanship is about their knowledge and handling of the bird not it's quality. The bird will be judged in confirmation also but not as a part of their showmanship score. That being said it costs as much to feed a lesser quality chick. The big Poultry show...

Leg mites love little quail legs. I'm still treating mine after fair. My Crested Italian is the Houdini here. I make sure the door is closed before checking food and water, about as easy to catch and hold as a greased marble. I can easily see quail in an apartment, quieter than a parrot.

Some years seem to be male heavy. I ordered dark Brahma bantams 3 times a few years back. Each order was for 5 chicks. I ended up with 1 pullet out of 15 chicks. The 15 Polish I ordered for a friend, 2 females. The d'anvers were not much better.

Since we don't get far from home anyway that's not much of an issue. Just getting to the post office to pick them up. I've got wyandottes and it seems at least 1 is broody at any given time. I also have orp bantams and oegb,'s that will go at the drop of a hat.

Being able to open the windows would be nice! Our air quality has been severely unhealthy for days, bordering on hazardous. We were supposed to be vacationing over your way in a few weeks but Harris Beach is being used for evacuation.

Came home and tucked fertile eggs under my broodie. She wasn't happy when I took the old ones but liked the feel of the 16 I gave her. Slipped a few bantam ORP eggs in with the parti wyandottes eggs. One of the pigeon eggs is close to hatching also. So much easier to wait 2 weeks for them...

Last year at fair we had some cream brabanters. We were collecting 2 eggs a day from both of them. The adjoining pens had a blue egg layer and on the other side was a white egg layer. They had me very confused! It will be interesting to see if they come back this year and do the same thing.
