Definitely hatch more if you can.
I don’t really know why cracking the egg open to check fertility is worth it when hatching your own eggs. If it’s fertile you’ve wasted one and if it isn’t nothing will happen anyway.
If she can fit that many eggs under her, I’d hatch them all. I know they are...
I think that comes from the misconception that the darkest egg genes are sex linked. Chooksman always argued otherwise. If you know the roo is from an exceptionally (eggceptiinally) dark egg, you are certain that all the offspring inherit it, but if all your hens lay dark eggs, this is just as...
The header says Minorca but this is the end of the Marans page. Less specific breakdown but lots of pints for type, I think this is good for a breed like marans, considers them as functional livestock rather than show birds.
I think if the BCM was recognised it would get its own with more...
Are they going to be wheaten Isabels or is there duckwing/partridge coming from the other parents?
If you are trying to breed true duckwing type isabels, I suggest using Cooper marans as the birchen will be easier to breed out than wheaten.
Obviously you have this girl now, and we always say...
This might be a question we have to pray to @Chooks man to answer.
Does anyone know if the SOPs in the US/Europe have a point based judging criteria? By this I mean how the UK Poultry standards have a points system for every breed out of 100, each breed breaking the 100 points down into...
Sorry for the hulk gif, I don’t know anything really about the specific SOP for wheatens (especially hens), so I’m only going to comment on type.
First off, it’s a girl! Wheatens are the easiest non autosexing pattern to sex in my opinion. Boys are way darker when they get adult feathers like...
Mystic Marans are a misleading name for these bird (don’t worry, I know that’s not your fault!). They are hybrids/cross breeds. Utility breeders produce them by crossing Marans with other breeds like the Rhode Island Red, to keep the dark eggs and increase egg production. (Sorry if you knew this...
I’ve attached my eBay listing for marans eggs. I don’t expect anyone here to buy any, the shipping to the states would be ridiculous, I’m simply showing you guys the listing if anyone is interested in seeing my breeding flock (I’ve probably talked better about them here than I do there, I’m...
I only hatch from my mixed pen when my number of laying hens has dropped, which they have. I have a broody brahma and a broody cross, might use them to hatch some layers.
If I don’t need layers, I focus on pure breeds. A surprise good quality chick will be more beneficial to the pure breeds...
I solved it without a thread:
I assumed all silkies were dominant white as paints exist, but I’ve learned from looking at posts that most white stock are recessive white.
So the roo is recessive white, hiding partridge under, and Reggie (the biological mother) is a blue paint, but E/e^b.
I’ve had the marans separated for over a week or so now, I’m going to start my eBay post to start selling their hatching eggs.
That is true, but more an excuse to post more baby silkie pictures. I got a surprise blue partridge silkie from my pen of whites and paints, I’m going to have to start...
My signature ‘I know it’s got nothing to do with marans’ post:
The silkies hatched today, I couldn’t resist sharing the chick photos. I’ll have more tomorrow. The last one pushed itself out of the egg the moment I lifted their mama marshmallow up to see.
I’d say this is normal, an apron/saddle might help as a precaution but it doesn’t look too sore yet. 15 hens to one cock is a sensible and safe ratio, so I can’t imagine that it will become too much. They will grow back when she moults next.
It’s a downside of roosters but necessary for...
I’ve got a few questions that anyone can answer, all input is much appreciated:
What is the best thing about marans?
What qualities do your favourite marans have that put them above the rest?
Outside the SOP, what qualities do you consider important for a good marans to have? This can be in...
I got given a new small coop today with a built in pen. I’m going to extend it and then move my silkies in. This leaves the bigger pen they are currently in free for the Marans.
This means I can finally start a more rigorous breeding programme for my marans, including the Golden cuckoo English...
Does anyone know what’s happened to the Golden cuckoo marans thread? It doesn’t exist when I search for it and the link Chooksman sent me doesn’t work anymore. I think he was the only member of this thread who used it so I don’t think anyone here will know. I’m happy to talk about them here but...
