The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

When I was young we always had a flock of 100 layers and an occasional batch of meaties. We also had some pheasant, cattle, hogs and horses. I didn't start breeding birds till about 2010 so I'm a fair newbie when it comes to breeding. I never know how many birds I have. I have anywhere from 7-12...

Both. If it is genetic, don't breed. If you suspect improper incubation, go ahead and breed, as it shouldn't show up in offspring. Usually high incubation temps will cause it.

I wouldn't be fond of being bitten either. I'm in my 60s, encountered hundreds (perhaps thousands) of snakes in my life and never been bitten. Everything from benign garter and blind worm snakes to copperheads, moccasins, fer-de-lance and eye lash vipers. Snakes will eat eggs and baby chicks...

snakes certainly startle you when running upon them unexpectedly but they're still a good thing.

I love snakes - such efficient predators of mice and they're native, unlike cats or the chickens and I for that matter that are invasive. The snakes can get into the places where the mice hide. I encourage them to hang out here along with all the native reptiles and amphibians. I hate it when my...

A few degrees high and it will just have an H. A few degrees low and it will just have an L. X2 ////////////////////////// I'm late to the show and I didn't have nearly as good of a hatch this time. I set the eggs 28 hours later than most. Then I had a really protracted hatch, which is...

I'd set up a separate brooder till it heals. Just a 60-75 watt drop light in a box will work.

Vitamin/mineral supplements and an animal source of protein (better amino acid balance) is best for breeders. The color of the yolk is most likely the time of year. Chickens don't assimilate carotenoids so they end up in the eggs making the yolk darker. Free range birds in warmer weather when...

I knew that. It was just the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw Huzzah since I've canoed that stream at least 50 times. Crystal clear, fast, good fishing and lots of gravel bars for camping. It's insanely crowded on summer weekends but weekdays and winter are great...

Huzzah? That's a beautiful float stream in the Missouri Ozarks.

Well, I've been way too busy to keep up with this way too busy thread or peer into my eggs for the last 3 weeks but my handy dandy Incubator Warehouse hatch timer tells me I have 10 hours and 57 minutes to go.

The eggs will be 'safe'. They'd even safe to eat after a couple weeks, they'd just be real gross. X2 Wouldn't they be surprised.

Thank you. The ball game was great. It rained the first three innings so the standing room only tickets turned into 3rd row down the 1st base line. And the barbecue brisket was amazing. That is a wonder. Thanks. I don't know what the best is but I use this and a gram scale...

It wasn't a perfect facility and run on a shoestring budget. No one was paid, even the biologists. It was started by a private couple but it was heavily regulated by the Costa Rican government's conservation department. A biologist had to be on the property 24/7. The flight cages weren't nearly...

They seem to be. I think there's just so much natural food around. I have rabbits, squirrels, deer, and all sorts of things but rarely have garden damage. Coons did eat all the corn one year. Once I had a beautiful crop of peaches. I tasted one and it was awesome. I decided I was going to pick...

I love them too. You can scoop almost all the food out of any of them without moving them. I don't know if they can go 4 high but 3 isn't a problem. Each will hold almost 2 bags of feed. I think the buckwheat may have been too close. They rarely visit flowers around the hives. Honeybees go for...

I just went through all the birds from the NYD hatch. Had to replace some bands. I'll probably be processing most of the cockerels in the next couple weeks. I sold two of the pullets today. The next time I check legbands the girls will be getting their teenage numbered bandettes. I use one...
