Welcome to Blairstown Buckleberry Farm! I'm from Hope which is the next town over but I'm currently studying in Upstate NY.
The people at the tractor supply are super nice. The 4h club I lead often did events with them. I think a swap/sale would be a fun thing to do!
We looked into having chicken stock at a park years ago and it seemed like a good option. Maybe something to look into?
I hosted one at my house years ago and it was tons of fun. I wondered if people still had chicken stocks!
I've had luck selling extra birds from orders. Several times I ordered a breed that I wanted, chose the nicest ones, then sold off the others as pairs. I also have a nearby livestock auction which is great for extra roosters. I don't usually advise buying from and auction, but selling is not...
I've had similar experience with meat birds (turkeys) in that they are messy and stinky and tend to have issues. I would clean and clean and they would always make a mess. I can't say I missed them much when I sent them off to slaughter! Dang things were pretty friendly though...
I think if you...
I've gotten some pretty decent silkies from TSC. Again, it depends on where they order from and even when they order from one hatchery, hatcheries often use many different breeders. That's how many of the larger hatcheries are able to offer so many breeds. Though it's difficult when they are...
It may change from year to year. In past years the TSC in Blairstown has ordered from Ideal. Haven't been in this year and I can't remember who they told me they ordered from last year.
Another trick for those looking to buy less than six chicks: First ask if six in the minimum. Legally, it is. However, some TSCs will sell less than six. Another trick is to talk to the people hanging around the poultry bins and see if they are buying. I've been able to go in on chicks with...
Check out the Blairstown TSC as well. They usually have silkies when they order the "assorted bantams". Just call and ask when they expect that order in! Different shipments come in at all different times, but they usually ask Ideal to send them whatever they have! Usually a pretty nice...
He's probably about middle aged for a goose. Maybe seven years old. I can't remember when exactly I got him, but I've had him since he was a few days old. I got him from cackle.
Hey guys! I have a Toulouse male goose I'm looking to find a home for. He's very sweet, although somewhat timid. Pretty quiet as far as geese go and gets along well with chickens. His friend died about a year ago but he was getting along well before he decided to start picking on my one rooster...
Yep older pullets work too! But I'm a sucker for the fuzzy butts, and usually have great success selling them at the auction (actually, the last few I brought I was mobbed by people before even entering them in the auction and pre-sold!)
I live in upstate New York, so it is quite a hike and honestly vent sexing is not at all accurate. You'd have probably about the same accuracy as putting them in a bin and picking out half and saying those were roosters. You are going to just have to wait until they are a few weeks old to see...
Unless you are crazy like me and bug all your avian professors to teach you how. Except, it's pretty much like ultrasound, and still very much eludes me!
Your best bet is to just sell them straight run. I find more people are willing to buy straight run when there is a chance they are hens...
I also highly recommend cackle hatchery. I think during the summer their limit is 15 chicks but they are such a pleasant company to deal with and I've gotten wonderful birds from them.
I woke up this morning to a buttload of snow and Cornell only delayed classes until 9:30. I couldn't believe it! It's still snowing pretty bad, but luckily my one teacher cancelled dissection lab (My partner and I finished stuff ahead of time anyway so we wouldn't have to come in) and I decided...
Welcome to BYC!
I'm not too familiar with farms in that area but there are a few BYCers in the area that can help you with that I'm sure!
There is an awesome show in north jersey in the spring and fall. It is called the Sussex county poultry fanciers' association show and they usually have a...
