It's just laundry detergent. Borax can be harsh on your skin. I googled "making your own hand soap" and came up with a bunch of links, though.

I don't like Fels Neptha, either. It also put holes in my kids' clothes. You can use Ivory. You just want to use soap and not "deoderant bars." Most of the things we think of as soap are really deoderant bars (Dove, etc.).

No, it doesn't get dry that I notice. It's only in there from about 7:30ish to 11:30ish. It's a good way to use up fabric scraps.
As for the diapers, I've used the same recipe just minus the soap, but I really prefer ALL Free/Clear. I can always find coupons for it. I've never had stink...
I just make cotton bags with velcro or a snap closure. You could make them with a PUL inner if you wanted, but I'm not sure I want PUL next to my food. You can also do foldover type bags, but my boys don't always fold them so I like the closure type.

We used to grocery shop once a month, but I've found that I save more money if I do it once a week, but I can coupon more readily. I generally save around $100/grocery bill.
