    Male or Female Chick?

The crowing of multiple roosters would be a big problem here in the city... Neighbors... Also, overmating of my few hens. I did find a home for my two rooster chicks recently. They went to a farm together. I was pleased that they didn't have to be separated or eaten.

    Male or Female Chick?

Aww, poor baby. He would have had to be re-homed, no doubt, as a male, unless our other rooster had died over the coming winter, which I sure hope he doesn't. Good to know. Thanks, everyone. A sudden death is far easier on those of us remaining than having had to give away a beautiful...

Here is another shot. Try to do a close-up on the feathers which cover his neck and behind, and you'll see what I am calling "striping" in the silvery-blue feathers:

    Male or Female Chick?

I would love to see some pics of chickens that are the offspring of solid golden roosters and Barred Rock mothers. But would you say my rooster, the papa of the chick, really would be considered a solid colored rooster, even with these striped hackles and tail feathers that appear to have...

The chick did have a blonde spot on its head. Is that a sign of barring? You can see the blonde spot in this picture, and does the wing show barring even at that tender age?:

Egghead, would you say the chick WAS barred, judging from the photo I posted of him above the photos of his Mama and Papa? He was blue-colored. Does that look like barring in his feathers to you?

    Male or Female Chick?

Dang that chick was pretty! So sad it died. What would the female offspring of this rooster and a Barred Rock pullet look like, do you think? Anyone have an idea? Or a picture? This is the mother of the chick:

    Male or Female Chick?

Here is a picture of the father of the chick in the picture above. Sunny Sky says a solid rooster mated with a Barred Rock hen will produce a barred cockerel or a solid pullet. But would this rooster be truly considered "solid," since his hackle and tail feathers have this mixed coloration in...

    Male or Female Chick?

"Sunny Sky" wrote: A barred hen and a solid cockerel will always yield 50% barred cockerels and 50% solid pullets. Your chick was a male since it was barred. Is this true? How could a hen always yield 50% cockerels and 50% pullets? Couldn't it be 20% cockerels and 80% pullets? Or am I...

Yes, sadly s/he was found dead in her nest on Sunday. We think what happened is similar to this story: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/343843/suffocated-to-death-by-broody-cochin-rip-sweet-hen

She said this chick's comb was a darker pink color than girl chicks this age tend to have. It was early to tell, but she was nearly certain he was male. Hens tend to have peachier looking combs at this age, but this chick's was more red in hue-- indicative of a male.

    Male or Female Chick?

A friend of mine who has hatched and raised tons of chicks says she is 90% sure Spunky was a male. That makes me feel a bit better. Having to rehome him when he grew up to be a loud rooster would have just done me in.

The dad is the rooster in my Avatar-- Golden with blue hackles, wings and tails. The mother was Barred Rock. The chick was dark with a blonde spot on the back of its head. The mother was Barred Rock and the Papa is thought to be part Orpington part Amerracauna or Easter Egger. She was a...
