I always microwave mine, and leave the heated clump sitting there until it cools. If I don't break up the clumps left behind they will be the start of mold. I have NEVER had grain mites YET. But it's simple, I DON'T have them.. at least in this bag or currently in my kitchen. After a whole year...
Thanks, I'll keep an eye out. I'm surprised that my bag of wheat bran sat on my kitchen floor for a year with it's top pinched closed only and no signs of mites or anything.
Moths in my bins, a whole other story! And to top that off, learning that rats are problem as well if I store it in my...
After about 1 year I have gone through my 50# wheat bran. I called my LFS yesterday and they do indeed have wheat mill 50# bags. :yaCan't wait to try it! Will update how it goes... :pop
Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow
Meal worm farming is fun. The beetles live approximately 6 months.
How often you should change out your bin might depend on the density of your beetles. But it seems like every 2 weeks to 1 month might be the norm.
Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow
Looks like you got a good start. I wonder, with that bottom you have, seems like a lot MIGHT not sift through. In which case you might get some hatched eggs in your beetle bin. But I may just be over thinking... and it probably won't matter too much anyways or at least...
75 degrees would be a sweltering day at my house!
Many people don't realize that the meal worms themselves also put off body heat. And so when you have a big pile of them, may actually be even warmer than your ambient temperature.
Humidity is OK, moisture not so much. We are often above 80%...
Because of my anxiety, I have already practiced the conversation I will have with my LFS owner when I call to ask if she has or can get this product.. at least 20 times!
Look forward to your next update. :highfive:
Eggs do stick to the bins in clumps sometimes. I use wheat bran and don't use screens either.
I wanted to tell you... I fold up a couple pieces of newspaper and lay on top of the bran. The mealworms will crawl in there to pupate, making it easier to collect them.
I haven't got the system down...
Slow progress is part of the norm.
The mealworms are so tiny when they first hatch. and for quite a wile afterwords. I often see movement in the bran before anything else.
Hi, welcome to BYC!
My suggestion is start big... takes a while for it be up and running getting you new worms hatching... several months in my experience.
Good luck and have fun!
Likely a moth!
They are notorious for invading the grain and laying eggs in it. Yes, I have this right now because I did not screen my bins. Working to correct it though.
I pull out the webby stringy things that are found in the substrate and smash/dispose of all those eggs I hear popping...
I started with 50,000 worms!
Don't forget that 1/2 will be male and not lay eggs.
Are you using oatmeal in your beetle drawer? I'm going to switch to oats in the beetle drawer when I add a mesh bottom, as it is my understanding all the walking around pushes the wheat bran through the mesh...
XP Pro was my Fave as well. I am using a chrome book right now and have 2 ad blockers running. It shows 12 blocks on this page. I agree that 10 is the least user friendly ever. My husband and daughter both run Linux Mint because they hate 10 so bad. FireFox is our usual browser, don't know why I...
I will have to read this a few times to clear up the details in my head. But can you tell me why you prefer oats in the top bin and bran in the others please? Thanks
