Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

Yes, I would keep them bandaged until they heal well. Then they may toughen up as a person who has a foot amputated when they are ready for an artificial limb. Something soft and cushioning would help. Corn pads or silicone toe pads may be good for that. Here is another thing I found, and...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

I think the finger cots would be good once the stumps are covered with skin. I would remove them during the night so that skin could dry out. There are some new breathable bandages in drugs stores. Hydrocolloid gel bandages are found in multiple sizes, and remain on for 3 days. Drug stores sell...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

I’m sure that she is stressed from losing the two feet and the isolation. The bleeding stump may hurt a bit. Hopefully, having her in a dog crate with food and water, but safely protected, will help her perk up. Try bribing her with water and some egg and tuna, but get back to her usual feed...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

I would not take the feet off surgically. They will fall off on their own, and will self amputate exactly where the healthy and dead tupissue come together. If you cut them off, there could be more chances of bone infection. It takes a month to 6 weeks for this to happen. There are many threads...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

Here is a good thread with pictures of a hen who lost her feet. At the end of the thread, in post 21, there are links to other threads that you may want to read: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/frostbite-lost-both-feet-my-hens-story.1343701/

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

I’m sorry that it may turn out that she loses all of her toes. Chickens can survive and get along on 2 stumps if they are about the same length. A lot of this decision is up to you, with how she will be able to get around, how much time you have to care for her, how special she is to you, etc...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

Time will tell, but it does look dark on the tips of her toes. It can take a month or more before toes will come off. Hopefully, they will heal. If you have some Betadine, you could bring her in once a day for a soak just to her feet. Put some Betadine in the water. Then dry her well before she...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

I use these in my coop year round, and they only come on to heat when the temperature gets below 35F. The water stays cold. You can also make a heated water stand out of light bulb, but I haven’t used one since the lightbulbs were changed to fluorescent. I once had a heated water stand that...

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

Glad that she is walking and the swelling is down. The color looks much darker than the first pictures. How does that color look compared to the upper legs. A dark color like that could be frostbite, but hard to know what her normal color is.

Chicken has super swollen frozen feet

I would bring her inside and set her feet and legs in tepid water, not hot not cold and gradually warm her feet. Don’t rub or massage her skin. It canntake a week or so to see the extent of damage with frostbite. The toes can turn black and shriveled. Pictures later or daily can help us tell...
