Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

And Modern Game roosters seem to have short tail feathers, correct?

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I sad faced all of the off topic posts since this isn’t a general chat as a hint no matter who they were from, but the ones that were actually about the correct subject got likes, loves and responses. 😉

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

Yep! I had the same thought when I started this project - getting the tail down will be the biggest hurdle to breed for! Also the standard will be more in the hen than the rooster as roosters will have too long of a tail and bigger combs. Wish me luck! If you want to help breed for this project...

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

Cubalayas are used for meat and eggs, which will bump production. People keep guineas that don’t lay well and are noisy/annoying, people keep chickens just for their cool looks, and people eat plenty of small birds like quail and quail eggs. There are plenty of smaller breeds out there that do...

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I did share some things with another breeder and thought we started something together, but they don’t want a chicken as small as a crow and they want larger eggs so I told them if they don’t stick to crow or raven sizes they really aren’t following the goal for this new breed and the person...

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I’m in central Georgia with Ayam Cemanis, BCMarans and other black birds. They do just fine as long as they have shade and water, and in serious heat any bird should have shade, water and misting options. Aside from huge oak trees shading their foraging area (I have issues finding enough...

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

Some of my F1 mixes just started laying and I’m waiting on a chick order of Sumatras and Cubalayas to be hatched and delivered. This project will likely take years though.

They do have a big beak, I just didn’t know I had “beak length” options as I’m not a professional breeder and don’t know every breed out there. 😆

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

Sumatras are definitely close! I just want to get closer! 😁

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

You’d be surprised how well BLRWs and Dark Brahmas can camouflage!! Or really anything with brown/red/buff/gold base and lacing or penciling. But the tricolors are still pretty!

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I think their point was that the black skin is important, which it is. 😉 That’s why they weren’t listed in the breeds I intend on using. 😉😁 I have Ayam Cemani already and thought exactly that. Too big, body isn’t right, upright tail and single comb are all a nope.

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

Yikes! No I wouldn’t want to have to need surgery on an entire breed or flock, I’d rather start with something small like a pea comb and see if we can go from there.

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

The hens have no comb and a lean body, but I wonder how hard those feathered feet would be to get rid of?

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

They have about the same pea comb as Sarama and Cubalaya, but that gorgeous coloring would show up in leakage for several generations. They are VERY pretty though!! 😍

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I have Ayam Cemani hens and love them, but the body is too big, too heavy, single comb and tail upright. I thought about using them for the fibro melanistic genes, but Svart Hona have the same traits except smaller size so it would be one less thing to worry about.

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I have Ayam Cemanis 😳🤯 What the… I have single comb Ayam Cemani but I’ve never heard of Dubbed Cemani! These are probably pretty hard to find??? How big are they? Is the only difference a cushion/pea comb vs a single comb or are they smaller than regulars?

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

I’ve thought about that as they are close, but I’d like to take a step closer to a crow personally and by mixing them with friendlier breeds it might help the bird aggression that Sumatras have. Plus the Bantam varieties are pretty close to a crow size (crows are not as big as chickens)...

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

Those who free range their chickens have had problems or fears with regards raptors preying on the flock, whether they are hawks, eagles or owls. There are a number of deterrent ideas to utilize, one of which being to put crow decoys around which need to be consistently moved around and cannot...
