There is a lot of controversy about DE. I'd recommend anyone not already familiar with either using or deciding not to use it do a lot of reading before making up their mind. (It seems, at least to me, to be a bit polarizing.)

Yep! I also have some tractors I use as smaller coops that are on a similar principle. Deep litter there, too.
This is uncovered. Then you put a tarp over the top/sides and double layer of shade cloth on the upper back (wind and rain break but allows ventilation and feeling of security when...
I think it just depends on the coop and climate, etc. I have built a few of the Garden Coops (purchased plans online) - the second one I added size to. It's perfect for hot climates and for deep litter. Here's a photo of my bigger one (the Naked Neck coop). They actually prefer to sleep out in...
HOW did I not think of that?!?! I have cardboard and can shred paper (I have more than my worm farm needs). How much do you break it up before putting it in?

Just a random comment - I have a few different coops, and different groups of chickens are better (or worse) at turning the litter. And I DON'T want to have to do it. So about once every week I toss BOSS over the areas to be turned. Problem solved - they dig for a long time hoping they can find...
I think I'm having this problem in one of my coops - it's very dusty in there, and I think the bedding is too dry. I'm going to start watering it (alternating locations).
