Why is a bachelor pen temporary? They can live there for the rest of their life. I'm spending money to make it just as good as any other chicken house and run. I'm not letting them have more babies, and I'm not releasing anybody. I have two roosters with five hens in a large run, and I've...
I haven't processed previous digital photos that I took to put them on my web site but I did just look at what I'd taken. Chickentopia is too large to see everything in one or two photos so there's no good overall photo. I'll need to take new photos because I've added more. I just don't have...
Chickentopia cost $20,000 last year. My father was still alive so I had him pay half of it. It includes a walkway on top to look down on the chickens with a swing and sliding board (yep, for me, a 47-year-old old hag but also my niece). I've put in another $1000 to have the little house...
The handyman came 9/13, 9/18, 9/19, and he still has to come back another day to finish the smaller house. This is going to cost me a few thousand dollars! I put Georgia, Iris, and Dusty in the smaller run when I got home on 9/18/19. They aren't happy but too bad. They're getting along...
To Lisafitz, based on the birds that I've raised, I would say that my ability to properly estimate the sex of a chick goes something like this:
1 week - 50% (in other words, total guess)
4 weeks - 60%
8 weeks - 75%
12 weeks - 90%
16 weeks - 100%
My chickies' thread has been hijacked! It's ok Penny.
As for my flock, I'm giving up my birthday (the only day of the year that I put myself before my animals) to have the handyman come out on Friday, and we're going to work on making the quarantine house useable so I can put three cockerels...
Will roosters by themselves fight though if they share a fence line with the hens?
I just e-mailed my handyman to see if he can come one day when I'm at work. I could go to work late and tell him what to do before I leave and then hope he actually gets it right without me there to guide him...
As I said, I have a handyman coming on my next day off at the end of October to finish off the quarantine house so it's useable. The quarantine house and run area is only 23% of the entire area so I can only put three of the cockerels in there. They get along great now; when confined, it may...
The chickens are not for breeding or eggs. They are my "pets." I hate that word because I don't believe one can own a living being but people think I'm nuts if I call them my "children." I give away the eggs to my brother and co-worker. I absolutely do NOT plan to get more chickens (via...
OP is here. The chickens are all together. I can't watch them all the time but, when I do watch, things are pretty calm. Only the daddy rooster and most dominant of the four cockerels mate with the hens that I've seen. The others will try but then either the hen herself or the dominant...
What is OP? I don't plan to let them have more babies, at least while I have more than one rooster. I may have had a lapse in judgement letting Perky incubate all those eggs but I'm not completely insane! Daffy is brooding on nothing but I remove the eggs that the others dump under her every...
Well, everyone said to murder them so that's not the help I wanted. Why does everyone see no value in the life of a rooster? He has just as much right to live as any of us. I wanted to know the best move as far as where to put them in the two areas right now, with nobody dying. I've had...
Nobody has replied yet. Either you have no ideas/solutions, you just want me to murder the roosters, or you just don't care. My co-worker who has chickens said to release them in the yard (where predators would get them ASAP) or to take the boys to the market! That's the same as killing them...
Help! I have a Chicken Game of Thrones. I don’t know what my next move is. I let my chickens have babies and now it’s a mess! I do no not want to kill any of the roosters! Nobody will adopt them so that’s out. Here are the players:
Born April 2018:
Angel – Easter egg rooster, tries to...
