I've got a Wyandotte hen setting on ten mixed breed eggs, as of Sunday. And about twenty chicks coming from Cackle next Friday. And maybe then I'll see what TSC has available; I've been strong so far! Mary
My MMcM silver and gold laced Wyandottes were not very big. The hatchery hasn't had as many years to shrink the BLRW's in size (my opinion) so they were and are bigger. Same for the buff Rocks compared to the barred. My BLRW's were pretty good layers, and I do value their broodiness. I...
My MMcM straight run BLR Wyandottes are lovely big birds, and the cockrel I kept was a very nice boy. He was a splash, made lovely blue chicks, and moved to another flock last summer. Big! Beautiful! Nice big chicks, and the two hens have raised several broods for me. The hatchery sent...
So true, and it's because nearly nobody keeps breeding stock for more than that good first year. It make economic sense, but it's very poor genetics. I want healthy long-lived birds who can produce for more than one or two years! Mary
Breeding for health; Keep your good producers, and breed two year old or older birds. Keep them producing as long as possible, rather than only breeding young birds, as is usually done. Value the old ladies!!! Also, don't breed any bird who's been sick, even if recovered; injured and...

You are all enablers here! I've been trying to NOT think about a chick order in April, but here goes anyway. Love my white Chanteclers from Cackle, and I kept a cockrel, and Candy has Walter. I really like Plymouth Rocks and Wyandottes, and my Speckled Sussex are sweet big birds. Welsummers...
