A good chicken saddle can prevent feather and skin damage from overbreeding, and allow backs/feathers a chance to recover. But yea, keeping roo to hen numbers appropriate is the best prevention.

If you have the space and desire, you could start a bachelor pad. It may work fine, until it doesn't. Being raised together helps them get along in the bachelor pad.
